Hi all.
I was thinking of dropping in a new gearbox and transfer box if one came along at the right price rather than spend hours changing various bearings and seals and have come across this one close to me.

Land Rover Defender LT77 gearbox and transfer box on eBay (end time 11-May-11 19:06:55 BST)

The thing I'm unsure of is the bit he mentions about earlier type with different ratios. Does anybody know when these were changed and would my 1993 200tdi be classed as an earlier or later vehicle?

Thanks in advance for any info.

I've got an LT77 that I don't need, I'm a bit further away from you but I'd take 75 quid (collected) for it if you want it.

PM me for pics if you're interested.

ratios depend on engine rrc, disco have 1.2 apart from mpi which is 1.4 early def have 1.6 with 2.5na 1.4 td tdi etc some v8s 1.2 but not all most usual change is 1.4 to 1.2 ratios work out when running approx 65mph -1.6 ,85- 1.4 ,115 -1.2 ,there are two types of t/box fitted early has roller brgs like series in intermediate gear and has large shaft held with clamp poking out the back and later taper brg with 30mm nut on back above level plug ,i would be wary of buying used unless you have recourse or no what your buying alot are ****ed or nicked why else remove although that is by means all just something to think about,i would be happier getting one from some long term member here than ebay

^ Mine isn't nicked, it came with a job lot of spares when I bought an S2a 109 last weekend. And a long term LZ member trailered it all back for me, lol.

Thanks for the info guys, much appreciated. Grubby that sounds good but West Yorks is a long way for me in a 200tdi Defender. Maybe able to borrow a van though. Do you know if it's been tested? Thanks.

I've no idea, Andy - I only got it last Sunday as part of a shedload of spares that came with my new S2a 109. The previous owner said it was OK, he'd removed it from a running 1989 Range Rover and was planning to fit it to the 109 along with the Range Rover's axles. I'm planning to keep the 109 standard though (apart from a 200 TDi conversion), so don't need the box.

Can you think of any tests I could carry out to check its condition? And I'm happy to send you pics & details of any serial numbers, ratios etc. if they're marked on it.

Re. delivery, how about the Landy Zone courier service?

turn input shaft while selecting all gears in turn feel for smoothness of rotation and change as lt77 check splines on rear of main shaft ,also feel for end float on input shaft and output

Hi Grubby ... is the Range Rover box not a different fit to a Defender regarding gearstick positions etc? I may be wrong but thought I'd read it somewhere. Regarding checking it over I would say exactly what James says. I'm assuming it has the transfer box too as this is the bit I need more than the gearbox.
Thanks mate ... much appreciated.

Hi Andy... that could very well be the case, since the gearstick on this box has been adapted with an L-shaped kink in it - it might conceivably have been adapted from a Disco / Defender to fit the Range Rover it came out of, certainly the 200 TDi engine that also came from the Range Rover wasn't a standard fit for the year.

Yes, the gearbox does have the transfer box. I'll carry out the checks that James suggested & get back to you later, then if everything is OK I'll PM you a couple of pics plus details of any other markings. :)

Much appreciated, thanks fella :)

OK, I've carried out the checks suggested by James - all gears engage nicely (including the transfer box), and it spins smoothly in neutral.

I can't send pics via PM so here they are:

And here's a pic of the 'modified' gear lever...

I couldn't find any markings to indicate ratios though - specifically where should I be looking for these? I'm not used to Landy bits yet.

Let me know if you want close-up pics from any other angles or want me to do any other tests.

whats wrong with old box

It's got that whining grating sound on overrun I mentioned before and so I was contemplating dropping another box in rather than spend ages trying to trace the bearing that's gone. Unless it's input/output bearing on transfer box I guess it would be a box out job anyway. I don't have the facility to drop a box out so trying to find the easiest, most cost effective solution.

Not positive James but I bought it off a Landy restorer as a sold as seen px and they told me it was a gearbox issue so just went along with it. Perfectly driveable and I've had it a year now but does seem to be getting worse now. Only does it in 3rd 4th and 5th though. Would the diff not cause it to happen in all gears?
