Is it supposed to have that notch in it? Does it look worn? I would have thought it needs to be straight. It's the same on the other side.

I'm not getting 1st, 3rd and 4th.
It seems to go into 2nd, 5th and reverse but the engine still cuts out like it's in gear even when it's in neutral.

I tried to adjust the raisers rhst the springs sit on to see if that makes a difference which it hasn't. I might have to open up the gearbox to look at the selector fork? No idea if that's a big job yet.

turrets worn as youd expect on an old vehicle, you cant see much besides 5th gear if you remove box top,your in 2 gears, thats going to take some skill to fix
 
Looks as though it's supposed to be straight. Mine must be massively worn down.

I wonder if that would be causing the gear selection issues.

As james says, you are in 2 gears at once. The problem is deeper inside than the turret
