i got told that steel ones are the ones to use in a hydraulic press its also on a website some where(i went looking it up to check lol) but i cant tell u where as i dont remember they might be wrong but there wernt much difference in price when i got mine so i just went for the steel ones

Got the ally ones from machine mart, read that steel ones can bounce on bearings and potentially chip them (when using a percussive maintenance tool no doubt!), having softer ally seems like a better idea against hardened bearings to me - but then I guess I can regret that when/if they explode in a press LOL

:D

Might have solved the space issue too, bike shed about to be ordered :D

oo nice be interested how you get on with the blind bearing ones might have to order one my self problem is there is always some tool id like its not good

+1 Coming on this thread don't help what with people posting links and pictures of shiny new tools :D

The way I look at it is that it'll pay for it's self eventually.

Went to collect the 300tdi R380...

Somehow think I've got the wrong end of the stick about what was up for grabs....

Very Heath Robinson!

Need to start looking for a cheapo reverse idler again...

I just disassembled both R380 oil pumps to see which was in better shape, the outside of the outer pump cog on both has concentric grooves around it as does the inside of the main pump body.

Is this normal or is it time to bin them both?

New reverse idler geared arrived today.

Just need a big tub of parrafin for parts washing and I can crack on with the reassembly, will see how I get on without a press just using heat and the freezer....

The best thing I brought was my press makes life sooooo easy I wouldn't be with out it now but my mini gearbox I built using heat and freezer it works well but not a patch on a propper press handy for ujs aswell :)
