OK, so i got my old input gear out, and have the new one and new bearings ready to fit. The original bearings on the old input gear actually look in fine condition - but I can't see how on earth i could ever get them off to swap em over, there is hardly anything to grip with a puller. Any ideas?


The outer races also look to be equally as hard to remove. I am wondering if i could just leave the old outer races in position and use the new bearings with them, has anyone ever done that - I didn't think bearing races were made specifically as matched pairs?



I guess it depends on whether different makes of bearings are manufactured to exactly the same spec.

Thanks James. Struggling a bit to see how that tool will work in this case as you can't get it behnind the roller cage. I guess you would have to get it behind the small lip of the cage that sticks out?
 
you need a set of puller to go with it ,separators go behind the bearing and you tighten them so they are behind race or what little of race is proud ,then pull the separators away from input gear
 
Okey doke, i'll get one of them and give it a go. I'm hoping if I re-use the old bearings I won't have to shim the tfer gear assembly when it goes back in, whcih i may have to do if i use brand new ones.
 
if you want to reuse bearings do it as said ,if replacing bearings you can just knock them off with any suitable punch or chisel, and dont mix races
 
When I replaced the input gear bearings on my LT230 I found that I didn't need to adjust the shimming at all - I got the standard sized shim from Land Rover and measured it all up as per the manual and the shim I worked out that I needed happened to be the one that came out.

I suspect the bearings are made to a much finer tolerance than the shim thickness differences and as you are selecting the correct shim to take into account variations in the machined dimensions of the transfer case itself then in most cases the same shim will go again.

I would still follow the procedure as per the manual though to be sure. It's not a job you want to be doing again really!
 
In the outer bearing carrier (which sits over the PTO hole under the cover) underneath the outer race of the bearing.

Another thing to note is that if there are gaskets between the carrier/plate/box then make sure new ones go back in. The inner of these two gaskets will affect the preload if removed and replaced with RTV for example. If there's RTV there already then put it back the same way it came apart.
