Greetings,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is normal. When I get to about 50, I hear a constant high pitched sound coming from the front of me landy. It doesn't matter if I drop a gear, or push in the clutch, the sound is the same (so I don't think it's engine related). If you accelerate up to 50+, then down again, it kind of sounds like a spooky air raid siren, or subtly like the noise you get running a wet finger around the top of a wine glass, but it's quite a subtle sound. I was thinking it might be normal, but I don't know. So far, things I've done that could have fixed/been related are:

changed axle oil
changed swivel pinion oil
oil seal replaced on o/s front wheel as it was leaking

On another note, I was wondering if someone could tell me where I'm meant to grease my swivel ball joint things?

Any advice welcome.

Cheers. Tom.

Hold on... Stock reponse number 5 coming up.. (We havn't had this for a wee while... bear with me...)

Now... repeat after me...

Universal Joints

:D:D

The swivels are greased from the grease or oil in the swivel housing(ball)

Check the prop UJ's for any play - ill bet thats what it is.

Vibration, yes...whining no for UJs! Much more likely to be transmission (ie diff) related!

the filler is on top of the swivel housing

what oil did you use, and where did you put the "swivel pinion oil" ?

i'd be looking at your OS wheel bearing for the source of the noise first

i've never heard a UJ whine, rattle and vibrate but never whine - but it's always worth checking them

Hiya,

For the swivel housing, I used EP90 oil, and the stuff that came out looked very much like ep 90 as well. I was led to believe that I should find some grease nipples located around there somewhere too, and I've seen pics of the swivel ball joint thing being covered in thick grey grease, so I'm just not sure....

ref. boydy.... you're worrying me now!! just what do you do to your landy?? lol

EP 90s correct , the grease you can put in them is called one shot swivel grease .
The only grease nipples you may find is on the steering ball joints and prop . there is none on the swivel itself .

easy way to figure out if it's the turbo is to disengage the engine and see if the noise is still there, or try it in different gears. My noise is there regardless of the engine, so it's definitely wheel/diff/aerodynamic related (and I don't have a turbo on mine anyway :) )
