lpg how far to your tank

I think some of you are wearing rose coloured glasses. Yes you may get 20 plus on a run with petrol. but if you compare town driving on gas with motorway driving on petrol then of course lpg doesn't look quite as good. my d2 v8 is 12-15 round town on petrol and 11-13 on gas so gas is much cheaper.

sitting at 65-70 mph on a motorway I get 22-24 on petrol and 15-17 on gas. so while still cost effective , not as clear cut.

admittedly I dont tow but am usually loaded up with bikes and camping gear.

Just run my tanks dry at 203 miles 65 litres to fill up so 14 ish to the gallon or about 17p/mile i reckon

I think I would get 250 miles on petrol doing the same journeys (A and B roads between 7 and 15 miles each trip , not much town or stop start)
so about 18/19 to gallon or around 28p/mile so I think I'm saving about 10p mile
at £2500 for a conversion thats about 25000 miles to pay back assuming no problems or servicing costs

I still think lpg is viable (especially if you buy one converted al ready!)

I think you should let your wife drive - she will squeeze more to the gallon.

I've just advanced the ignition on my 1990 3.9 classic on gas and now she runs beautiful on the slightest throttle opening. I was backing off the throttle to almost nothing at 60mph on the motorway.
Never need more than a tickle on the pedal now and she pulls better so maybe I'll get a light on it and check how far the advance is after my twiddle.
The motor dosn't pink on petrol so I reckon she'll be right mate.
Just refreshed the gas so we'll see how much of a difference it's made to consumption.

After running this lot of gas out I'll have a go at setting the gas mixture for further improvements I hope.
Might invest in a new dizzy cap as well as mine was furred up on the contacts. Just cleaning those contacts felt like it made a difference and that was before advancing the ignition timing so hopefully I'll be getting more than 11 mpg now on gas.

my 4.0 P38 with a 70ltr donut in the wheel well does 240 miles on it, which I thought was quite good, £37-£40 gets me 240-250 miles... If I behave! Atleast theres no needle to watch move if my foot slips at some traffic lights!

i've got a 105 Litre Tank in me boot & I get about 285 miles when towing my caravan.

mine struggles abit with a 22 foot van going up hill but being an auto I just drop it into "2" & off she pops no problem!!!

ive got a 97 disco v8 and just done 100 and its cost £19 @ 51.9p litre that dont sound too good to me what do you reckon?

Just sold my 3.9 Disco but on a sensible run (55/60 mph) i regularly got slightly over 200 miles to a fill ( twin 37s under slung ) If you have single point gas injection, rather than multi point , you can tweak it yourself. On the vaporiser there should be a brass screw with a lock nut on it, Loosten the locknut and have a friend, partner, brother, nieghbour, girlfriend, boyfriend or complete stranger bring the revs to 3500 and hold it, wind the screw in until she starts to misfire then back out a quarter turn and lock up nut. this is the basic setting and will give best economy and power. Obviously make sure all ignition components are tip top and 5 degrees of advance on the dizzy will work wonders aswell

looks like you are getting around 12 / gallon. not great , but , if you have a heavy right foot and town driving then probably about right.

hello there are we talking petrol or lpg as i have a 99 disco now i dont know the size of the lpg tanks but £42 fills them up and i get about 255 miles before i have to fill up again .

I get 95 miles on 40 ltrs

But I've just weakened the gas aff quite a lot and it made no difference to power etc so I'm hoping that it will be better now.

i done 105 mile today at 70mph cost £15.50 at 51.9p a litre.. cant be arsed working it out cos im thick but i ok with that sort of mpg

We've just got our 1999 Disco V8 back on the road after an engine rebuild.

The twin gas tanks are 30 litres each, and we still have the full size petrol tank.

It's only done 100 miles since start-up, so we are being a bit cautious with running in, but we filled the gas up yesterday, 49.99p a litre in Rushden (NN10) and it took 24 litres, which surprised us as we expected the tanks to be empty. That gave us one green LED on the gauge and occasionally the second LED would light.

After about 15 miles of driving round the country lanes in our area, both LED's were out and the Red LED had lit, presumably to show that the tanks were empty.

I've emailed the installers (Energyshift in Ashford, Kent) to see if there is any information available, and we will be having a look around the tanks and piping to see if there are any leaks. We would have thought that if there were leaks then the tanks would have taken more than 24 litres of gas.

The system is a Zavoli Multipoint.

I would ignore the led lights. They are notoriously inaccurate. the guage will only be on one tank not both , the theory being they will empty at the same rate. the best thing to do is run them dry and note the mileage. twin 30l tanks will give a usable capacity of around 48/50 l of gas or about 11 gallons in old money. my d2 would give about 160 miles on that. I have 4 green leds and 1 red(on twin 40 l tanks) . sometimes I'm on red after 50 miles other times I have 4 green after 150 miles (200 miles ish to run dry)
I wouldn't have thought you have any leaks.

Since posting that, we have had a run out in the beast, and ran the tank(s) dry, also spoke with Peter Feacey at Energyshift, a most helpful guy, couldn't have been more forthcoming with info and advice, someone I could happily recommend.

Second fill got just over 47 litres in, the theoretical maximum is 80% of 60 litres = 48 litres, so both tanks getting filled OK, and the LED indicator briefly showed four LED's, down to one after 50 miles.

Peter Feacey also sent us new LPG filters for the twin feeds to the valve blocks, plus a pair of new solenoid coils for the tank control valves. he also sent them before receiving payment! The parts were here this morning. Excellent service.

So, tomorrow we will top up the gas, and Sunday we are going to Newark for the Landy show, hope to be able to advise MPG when we get back.

It will when it goes BANG... weak mixtures are not a wise idea of you have a mixer based system, unless you know what you are doing, weakening it off to try and get 'economy' is the main cause of the mixer systems reputation for blowback missfires (destroying the AFM in he process)

My 3.9 Vogue SE Auto returns 210 miles to a 62 litre fill which is about 15 mpg I think on a single point non lambda system I think once it managed 240 (all motor way in cruise nearly)

We got 13mpg equivalent at a steadyish 70-75 on the way up to Newark on Sunday, LPG is 49.99p here. Tanks hold 47 litres actual capacity, 60 litres water capacity.
