P38A Lpg/Gpl on a diesel??

I’ve not done it myself. But know some theory about it. I think the fuel savings are probably non existent. As the ratio of lpg to diesel will be quite low. Not like a petrol engine were it replaces the petrol. This means the cost of the kit vs the pence per mile saving is unlikely to equal out in the sort of annual mileage most p38’s do.

It has more benefit as a power adder. But the gains are limited. Where it does help is on highly tuned setups. And it works well if you are also using Nitrous Oxide as an additional power adder. In this case rather than injecting more diesel you’d inject lpg along with the nitrous.

I would say in the U.K. consider a diesel lpg kit for fun and tuning purposes on a setup built for power. I think of you buy on the basis of saving money, then you may end up disappointed.

Looking at it after reading a couple more threads on tinternet' your quite right, burning two fuels at the same time doesn't equate to a saving!!
Interesting though.

When it was started with large road transport vehicles I had read where test vehicles were producing so much extra torque they were breaking crankshafts, it was called "the torque twister kit". A friend of mine years ago fitted lpg injection to his tdi200 Disco, said it improved towing torque radically, don't think it improved economy though.

A mate o mine worked for a window company ,who fitted the diesel vans with gas,He said the van he had used a tank of diesel in 400 miles ,but with the gas it used a tank of gas and a tank of diesel in 400 miles...And it was no faster,His words not mine........;)

The savings come from using a mix of the fuels. In theory you’ll burn the same quantity but because some of the fuel is lpg it should be less money pence per litre. Thus the £ saving. In reality the saving is likely to be too small to make any difference for most annual distances.

Pmsl,

Fair enough:D

The addition does increase the efficiency of the burn but the savings aren't like an 'instead of' set up.

The thing is people's driving style doesn't tend to alter and easily available power tends to be used without noticeably accelerating faster or pulling harder so economy doesnt change much.

Just curious with the diesel/lpg mix would that not put a massive strain on compression and weaken other moving parts in the engine. With the petrol on open system not injection you notice the reduction in pulling power when you switch to lpg use. I had lpg on my 3.5V8 SU Carbs and you feel a tug effect as you accelerate.

Maybe the savings are from vat or tax back for company's running duel fuel vehicles,, I think it was government grants that helped convert there fleet in the first place.....

I've some of you V8 bus drivers talking about fitting LPG systems yourselves.
Do you need certificates for the system for the mot?
Here in France we wouldn't get away with it!

Strictly speaking, no. However, most insurance companies want a certificate and to be honest it is worth having a pro go over it with a sniffer to make sure you haven't dropped any clangers.
