Has anyone seen or heard much about lpg in diesels? I notice that there are a few company's now selling kits, Alisport being one of them. Just wondering if there have been any horror stories like pistons melting etc.

Sorry can't help but I'm also thinking of getting a kit if I can find some positive independant feedback. There was an article in LRO many moons ago but even that was a bit sparse on data.

I've only heard one person in my area that has it but yet to bump into him. Tinely tech and allisport both do kits and will tell you they work but as they say proof is in the pudding, just got to find someone who's eaten it

Yea My thinking is that if I can get the same Mpg out of the Defender as the Freelander I can justify trading the Freelander in and having 2 Defenders. I would need two because my wife would cut my balls off before she would give the 90 back.

Have a look at this site, and then forget the whole idea.

Can Diesel engines be converted to run on LPG?

One way to do is to fit spark plugs to the head instead of injectors, fit ignition coil and distributor, and run only on LPG gas. Bye-Bye diesel .... . and bye-bye a lot of cash for nothing gained.

Another way is to leave the engine more or less alone, and spray LPG gas into the inlet manifold where it will mix with the air and go into the cylinders. Ignition will take place in SOME diesel engines, but may not in others, especially as the revs go up using mainly the gas.

There are so many problems, and such large costs, it simply isn't worth the bother.

Remember this, both diesel engines and LPG have been around for a long time - but not together in the same car. You have to ask yourself this: Can YOU be the first person on the planet to devise an effective LPG conversion for a diesel engined car?

You would be far better off going bio-diesel, or veggy-oil.

No No Charles there are kits available on the market it involves inducing lpg into the intake that burns as well as the diesel giving more power and more economy all I am after is there anyone on here got a kit fitted and their views on it. I'm already developing a bio diesel reactor but thought it would be great to add lpg to get an even cleaner burn and even less emmisions. Then the muesli munchers can stuff their anti 4x4 stickers right where the sun don't shine

Sure, and that's exactly the second method I mentioned.

You could easily try it out you know.

Put a bottle of propane in the passenger seat (best move her out first) and fit a regulator to it. Run a hose to the inlet manifold somewhere, so when the gas flows it goes in with the air. Do NOT introduce the air BEFORE ant turbocharger or supercharger or the explosion when it blows up the intercooler may be VERY serious.

Keep the gas OFF, and head for the motorway. Cruise at 50 mph or so and start turning on the gas .... if you can keep going at fifty AND more or less take your foot off the throttle, you have the beginnings of a plan.

If not, go home, dump the propane bottle, put her back in the car and go for a beer.

Brads right it runs 70% diesel 30% LPG it is totally different to what you envisage, it uses the diesel to ignite the LPG to give a clean burn and more power, which translates to economy , although probabaly not in my case as I have the old lead foot. Its like accidentally putting three gallon of petrol in a 10 gallon tank and then topping up with diesel. EXCEPT you don't get the problems with the pump packing up and you don't wash the lubricants from the upper cylinder, I hope. And it cost about £700 if you can fit it yourself.

That is STILL exactly what I described first time round!

The compression ratio of diesel engines is WAY too high for any significant amount of propane (LPG) to be burned, unless engine destruction doesn't bother you. Sure, send in a little gas, and sure it may help things along a little, but think of the cost and the inconvenience.

For a start, where will you fit that torpedo size gas tank?

You'll get more gain by fitting £5 EGR blanking plate than by fitting a £700 gas kit!

Thanks boxer, I would rather get a kit that increases the gas flow depending on how much throttle you have open rather then plumb some hose into the inlet and hope for the best. Sorry Charlie boy. I'm building a 110 at the mo and theres room underneath fer a tank

Dont bother...

Its been tried in trucks, and was proved to be totally unviable.. Not real gain in economy/power, seem to remember a head gasket problem came out of it as well...

Safeways had a fleet of Gas only Scanias, those heaps of **** had a limited range, broke down once a week, and weighed more than a standard unit, so less payload, Safeways had to plug then for envirinmental reasons, but even Sways hated em, all were scrapped last year...

Sorry mate thanks for the relevant info.

It doesn't matter how I write that it still sounds sarcastic.

Its not meant to be.

Does anyone out there run what Brad and I are talking about? If yes then what is it like?

Sorry Brad, dint have time to get that V8 going,I'll try to do it in the morning, wouldnt it be worth asking Allisport if they have a Demo truck for you to try ? Looking at the quality of the bits they made for pete's 90 I dont think they would put their name to any old cr-p,what does Dom say ?
