FYI:
The tank level gauges are driven by the same float arm that provides the 80% contents cut-off on the filler.
Most have a magnet and a set of four sensors that pick up the magnet as it passes, and a bit of electronics. It is mechanically crude but reliable.
As only one out of 2 gauges are wired up (most sill tanks are in pairs) the actual contents is for just one tank, you have to 'assume' that the other one empties at the same rate.
Our own Disco 2 gauge shows full (4 led's) on fill up, but drops fairly quickly to one or less, and most driving is on the red 'empty' led.
If you think about it, the tank never gets 100% full in the first place, and the actual level is broken into 4 steps, then it's no surprise that they are inaccurate.
We know that we can get between 130 and 155 miles on our two tanks between fills, depending on driving speed etc., so set the trip at fill-up and that is always pretty accurate.
We have a local filling station, plus the road map with LPG filling points, but there are situations where, for example, the M5/M50 junction services only have it on the northbound side, and a lot of the on-line maps are hopelessly out of date. Inverness in September: 3 out of 4 stations didn't exist or had moved. We found one by accident!
