Low range problem...

Hello everyone.

I have a 95 4 litre that is not engaging the low box.

I am getting no warning lights or select neutral message on the dash.

The box works over in low but it is as normal hi range.

Checked the fuses, put one in number 11, still don't get the select neutral.


perhaps as a side issue, when in sport mode all is ok, when in manual, the box does not shift down, not do I get kick down. When I select gears manually, it does not register on the dash that the selector has changed.


Tried to check underneath, but I am thinking electrical issue maybe... Transfer ecu??

Also, on start up, should you get the orange cog light on? because I don't.


Id appreciate any ideas or thoughts....

I had a similar problem with my low range and the sport light, both were traced to faulty connections at the ECU. The sport light (and lack of cruise control) was traced to the multiplug to the cruise control ECU being loose. With the low range I attacked it armed with a copy of the relevant wiring diagram from RAVE and a circuit tester; I set out to meticulously check every connection. As soon as I started I found that one of the wires that went into the multiplug to the ECU had worked loose. It was an earth wire. Once I pushed it back firmly into the multiplug block and tried it, everything worked fine. I had already checked the wires to the transfer motor and repaired some damaged wires.

I can't guarantee it'll be that simple but I was ready to replace the ECU and the motor, both which would have been expensive and ineffective. Check the wiring thoroughly before you do anything else.

Transfer box Hi/Low motor connections or the motor itself ?????

I always run the car in Low gear, through the range at least once a month over a distance of a mile or so, just to keep the linkages free and the geartrain oiled.

you dont need to run a mile its the same gear train as high you only need to engage low to keep motor good

the gears are allways turning as such.chain is driven slower thru epicylic,which is lubricated at all times through oil pump
