Loud clonking

Afternoon all,
I have done a search but can't fi d any accurate advice. I am only 3 months into hippo ownership and when out drive the 03 td4 manual today i noticed every time i change gear there is a loud clunking noise from the offside rear. It's louder if you drive along and come off and back on the throttle. I know it's a can of worms question but has anyone had the same problem and found a cure

Centre rear diff bush is most likely cause. Rubber splits. Search for how to change. Most upgrade to poly bush which lasts longer.

I agree first port of call and that also tells us you need to do the one wheel up test AaaaaaSAP!

I agree it is likely the front mount for the rear diff. It has 3 mounts, 2 at the back and 1 at the front - the front one goes regularly.

It going can be caused by the VCU being overly tight and/or wrong tyres being fitted. If it is due to this, there are much more serious problems that can occur if the VCU is not replaced. You can test the VCU with the One Wheel Up Test, this is described in the following thread...

Thanks for the replies chaps. First thing i done when purchased was 4 x matching tyres on the old girl as i had heard about mismatched tyres.
Secondly and don't shoot me but i have been told by a (ahem) specialist that the one wheel up test is a load of rubbish and no indication of any issues. Are the rear diff mounts something a competent home diy er could do?

They're talking ****e. It was a well known and respected VCU refurbisher and some forum members that came up with the OWUT. It's the only test that can be done at home, with the minimum of specialist equipment.

Front mount is very easy. Side mounts not so easy, but still possible by a competent DIYer.

...and did the specialist offer any alternate suggestions for testing the VCU? I described the Freelander setup on an engineering forum and asked whether the members thought the 1WUT was a reasonable test of the VCU and got no negative feedback.

The front mount is easy but it is under the car in the middle of it - if you lift the car, be very careful its not going to fall on you. I use my inspection pit when working underneath, but I have also driven it onto paving slabs in the past as I don't trust jacks and axle stands. Also consider making some HippoRamps....

Just bought 2nd Freelander TD4 MK1, unfortunately propshaft has been removed, noticing a clunking when lifting clutch on gear change, also intend to replace propshaft, any help appreciated.
