Freelander 1 Lots of smoke

Scotland.
Freelander 1 td4 making a smokescreen.
Mainly white smoke worst on starting and under acceleration. Suspect maybe turbo as now making grating noise when revved.
If I'm right do I need to replace turbo or will cartridge suffice.
Grateful for any help or advice. Thanks.
