Lost power then died suddenly

Hi All.

Driving home tonight the car started "phut phut" sounds underneath, losing power, progressively until it died.

Oil light came on at this point (?) and strong smell of something.

Any initial ideas??
 
Thanks for replies so far. Waiting for RAC to arrive now. Will make a list of any suggestions!

I really do need this to be fixed, hopefully at the roadside. Am a bit worried that it has dumped all the oil out or something. The daily driver is also laid up since it decided to break both front coil springs over a road hump at the weekend:eek:
 
Oil pressure light could mean many things. If the engine had stopped spinning it'd illuminate. However if it was due to a lack of oil, by the time the light comes on your engine is usually toast. Check the dipstick, see if there is anything left in there.

Dead simple, two bolts to mount it to the bracket and one bolt on the tension adjuster....

a couple of wires, job done....Disconnect battery first mind! or keep the wires away from anything metal!

I see you're in Beds, whereabouts?

You could get your alternator rebuilt it shouldn't be too expensive. I know two places that might be able to do that, one is in Markyate, the other is in Luton. In the alternative you could do it yourself, get a new rotor, brushes and voltage regulator and maybe the bearings (if a new rotor doesn't already have them on). Takes no time at all to do.
 
Have ordered a replacement off eB** and a S2 club member locally has offered to help me to fit it, so a good result all around. Very keen now to learn how to do it myself with the safety net of having a friend around. Tea and bacon sarnies should make it even easier! Thanks all for your helpful comments and advice.
 
Car parts place have told me that it could be one of two different types (2 wire or 3 wire)?

Does anyone know where I could find a serial number or model number on the alternator? All I could see under the bonnet today, albeit in failing light and a torch, was LUCAS and Made in UK - fat lot of use.

Current unit has two round connectors at the 6 o'clock position, one connector at the 10 o'clock position and one at two o'clock plus a heftier connector at 2/3 o'clock.
 
From what I can find....

65Amp is the Lucas 133/65 or 127/65
80Amp is the Lucas 133/80

Thats all I could find for Vin numbers upto HA610293....as attached....

Thank you for all suggestions. Eventually took photos of alternator in engine bay and emailed them to parts supplier. Tech blokes looked at it and one is now on its way to me.

I will post when I know for certain which model it turned out to be. Thanks to Saint for very quick, informative post.
