Hi guys. Me again, just bought the wife a disco 300tdi, all fine until on way home today when she went to overtake and lost power, very sluggish when under load (smoke too) will not rev past 4500 rpm, turbo seems to be ok ( spindal turning and pressure building in hose) I have serviced it today but still have the fault, tried blanking EGR valve, taking cat off ( just incase it had collapsed) valve clearance fine all pipes and hoses were fine.and new lift pump fitted
The exhaust smells really hot (if that makes sense) any suggestions

Had a motor did exactly that. It turned out to be the inside of the air intake hose that had separated from the outer. It was ok up to a certain rev, the as the pipe closed up with suction under load it lost power and black smoked like hell. In the dark, you could actually see a glow like a flame coming out of the exhaust as it tried to run on virtually no air.
I could be wrong, but if it were mine , I would be looking at the possibility of a collapsing pipe. From the outside looking on, it will appear fine.

I have looked at pipe work and took it all off, and run it without air filter and inlet hoses but still had the same problem. Thanks for advise though

I'm not surprised the exhaust is smelling hot !!!! Reving to 4500rpm is totally, totally unnecessary. You should be changing gear at nearer to 3000.

It's not a Vauxhall Nova you know !!!!

Dave u are quite right. It is not being driven like this. This is a fault which has been found and it should not restricting. I want to find fault before it gets worse

But if I remember correctly you said that there was a loss of power during an overtake and the engine was running at 4500rpm? As I'm sure you know all diesel engines are governed and when they get to their max rpm they just stop accelerating, unlike a petrol engine.

However, assuming this 'lack of power' occur at lower revs then the usual suspects are:

1. Blocked air filter;

2. Blocked fuel filter;

3. Delaminating turbo hoses;

4. Perforated intercooler or hoses;

5. If manual injection pump - pump settings modified;

6. Air entering fuel lines;

7. Cam/injection out;

8. Faulty/weak lift pump;

and so it goes on.

Cheers Dave. I will look into in more depth today. Initial fault was lift pump hence overtake not happening as would not rev past 2700rpm changed pump and found this fault, still very sluggish on acceleration, my friend has same model which is a lot more responsive and revs over 6000rpm

Err, just a thought but doesn't the rev limiter kick in at around 4600 on a 300tdi??

Never needed to take my old girl past 3000

Ok. Yes turns out max rpm is 4500 but it is still sluggish under load, I have a small hill at bottom of my road which I can go up in 5 th in my defender but having to drop to 3rd in disco and then it's still struggling, the power is there when on flat but takes an age to get there. Any suggestions?

Yes many, but looking at your recent posts the only things that come to mind are not complementary

6000rpm in a TDi 300 - really :drum:

Thanks to all the helpful people who advised. Turns out the waste gate actuator clip had come off. Put back on and all is perfect. Did find compression a little low on pot 3 so weekend sorted now.
