Looks like it could be your headgasket! What milage has it done & has the gasket ever been done before? It still may have the plastic dowls & shifted a little! only a thought, but it a common problem on the K series engine!

mileage is now 95k and yes the head was done 4 years ago

the plastic dowls & shifted a little! please explain

the plastic dowls & shifted a little! please explain

When the head gasket is replaced, to line & hold the head together before fitting the stretch bolts 2 dowls are put in & they used to made of plastic & did'nt last long & allowed the head to move & ruin the gasket!
If it is your head gasket whats gone insist on having STEEL dowls fitted & a multi-layered head gasket!
I fitted this to mine & had no probems since! Now on 116,000 miles

When did you change them stevez?

Steve I had this problem 6 months back on my 1800 X which has had a replacment engine under warranty 56000 now at 102000 miles, I poured a radiater leak stopper fom a motor factor. Touch wood it's been fine since.

Dearot, I changed them because they came with the "upgrade" kit I fitted!
I too, was losing water & checked everything (waterpump, rad, heater matrix, allthough the heater matrix was leaking K-seal sorted that out!)
My friends a mechanic & was kind enough to give me a helping hand (in fact he ended up doing most of the work)

I would advise against using any of the proprietary leak "sealers", as they are liable to block small waterways in the block or radiators.
Knowing that the 1.8 and 2.5 engines are prone to overheating - you are potentially liable to end up spending thousands ( I kid you not) to replace the engine or a radiator( the heater radiator is a complete dash strip down jobby).

Oil leak is prob just the cam carrier, or rocker cover, at worst a cam seal, they all do that from new, repair is easy but means removing the cam carrier and timing belt. Best to leave it unless the oil is likely to foul a belt or something.

Have you checked the dipstick for sludge deposits? if suspect hgf

Good point, although all the new MLS gaskets have the steel dowels.

If Adam has a service history the MLS will be listed in the receipts. If not, then there is a way you can tell if MLS is fitted. There is a grey tab from the MLS gasket, its from the shim, its just above the serial number on the k-series. It is black on the upper surface

See thumbnail below, grey tab is seen just below my finger:

He's right you know. Some RAC/AA patrols carry it but I think its only a temporary get home measure.
