Hi,
So after spending nearly enough money to buy a new main loom with various people trying to sort the electrics on my 110 200tdi I've been told that the whole lot needs replacing
Having no clue with electrics I have a few questions.
1.
Looking on autosparks site it gives you about 6 options of chassis numbers to choose from. What difference will this make to the loom? Mine is an old galvanised chassis bought from a local guy who used to fabricate chassis years ago.
2.
My 110 is a 1986 with a 200tdi defender engine installed. I'm guessing that means the main/engine and chassis looms would all need to be 200tdi, but what about the instrument panel loom? Is there any difference between the 86 instrument loom and 200tdi.
3
I know I need to order main/engine/chassis and instrument looms. Can you tell what else I need to order for a full replacement.
Sorry for the dipstick questions but electrics aren't me! I've thrown good money after bad trying to get this sorted and I want to get it right this time!
Any other suggestions or advice will be appreciated.
Thanks for your patience!

I am currently going through this with the my rebuild on the brunt out thread linked above. The first thing to understand is there are more than one loom on the vehicle. There is the rear loom which takes power front to back for the lights, the engine loom which for your engine, and the main wiring loom on the bulkhead which is the fuse panel, dash and switch gear. Unless you know it has changed (like I did with mine) it is mor ethan likely that everything other than the engine looom will be original to the vehicle as nothing else has changed.

The easiest way to tell what loom you have fitted is the fuse panel and the connectors for the rear loom. If the fuse panel is glass fuses it is the original loom and you can order it based on the age of the vehicle, if it has spade fuses it is not the original (the problem I have with mine) and you need to check the plugs for the rear loom, the earlier type using bullet in black rubber plugs or the newer type using spades in plastics plugs. If you have a look under the bonnet on the engine side of the drivers footwell will be the plugs for the engine loom and the rear loom.

If it look like the below with the rubber bullet connectors then it is a 200tdi loom.

Once you have worked out what type of loom the main loom is the rest is fairly straight forward.
  • For the rear loom the differences are if you have a heated screen and wiper fitted or not.
  • For the engine loom the early diesel and 200tdi are the same and depends on the rating of your alternator (discovery's had a 65amp)
The other thing to do is get in touch with autosparks, they have been very helpful once I got a response. Took a couple of days for an email replay initially but after that were quick and helpful to reply.

I would also recommend having a play on their website and just looking through the various different chassis number options, you will likely find that most of the options are the same part number anyway and it is not a complicated as it first appears.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, very helpful!
I have the glass fuse box and this above the drivers footwell

Am I better off ordering the early loom as is fitted at the moment?

From that I think one of these is the rear loom you want depending on if you have wiper and heated windscreen:
Wiper
non-wiper

And this is the engine loom you need:
45amp
65amp

Also looking at the autosparks website the late 2.5l diesel and the 200tdi main loom look to be covered by the same loom: link?
I would replace like for like as it make everything easy and does not require additional parts and work to change things. I only have the later loom in mine because I fitted a complete 300tdi bulkhead that came with dash loom etc. when mine had rusted beyond repair.

But I would speak to autosparks about the main loom as I did. They will be able to tell you if there is any meaningful difference and which one is the best for your vehicle. The main loom for you will not be changed by the engine swap so you should be able to go on chassis number which will be on the vin plate or v5.

Thanks again for the reply. I'll give autosparks a bell next week.
Cheers
