Hi All,

Not wanting to break with my seemingly annual tradition of swapping Land Rovers every 12 months, i've had a look around for L322s, this was after chatting to a chap with one at the LPG pump on Saturday morning.

I popped out to see one today which was up for £9,500. It was a 4.4V8 Vogue with LPG on 78k. It had recently had a new gearbox (recon) for which i've seen the receipts. It drove very well and was very tidy.

When we arrived back from the test drive, i noticed a very loud whirring noise, which turned out to be the EAS compressor, the car was also very slow to change height.

I've only started to do some digging on price since returning home and it seems 9.5k for a 2004 is pretty steep. It also sounds like the compressor is on the way out, i'm guessing this will be a sod to change given that there is a doughnut tank in the wheel well.

The current owner mentioned he had a battery drain issue with the car and believed it was relate to the sat nav which had therefore been disconnected, which is another concern.

Whilst i was there i tentatively offered 8k which he rejected, so i know he's looking for 9 or there abouts, which given the potential issues sounds like its going to cost me a tonne more.

Other than that it was very clean and tidy.

Any thoughts

Walk away....

Not heard of the Sat Nav causing excessive drain as it shuts off after 3 minutes of ignition off....

Most common causes are the Final Stage Resistor for the heater fans and the headlamp wiper motors.

9.5k is a bit steep unless it is minty fresh mint condition.

There are two places the EAS compressor is moved to commonly, these are in the little stowage compartment on the right hand side of the boot below the fuse panel, or they cut the rear bulkhead under the rear seats and pop it under there (where mine is).

Sat Nav could be disconnected as it is fecked...common cause is disconnecting the battery or connections while the red light is on....it bricks the unit. Remedy is a new one!

There are loads about, trouble is you are getting into the winter premium period where 4x4's in general get a price hike for no other reason than the minor threat of snow!

There has been an outbreak of new L322 Fever with the current threat of one days light frost,
There is a thread called Advice by Merlin a page or so down with a lot of hints on what to look for when buying an L322.

As mentioned by Saint.V8, the satnav is unlikely to have been the source of the current drain. In fact I expect that when you reconnect the satnav you will find that it is non functional. The reason is that if you do not allow the satnav system to 'sleep' before disconnecting the vehicle battery, the firmware gets corrupted and there is no easy fix. So if I were you I would ask for the satnav to be reconnected to see if it still works. If it doesn't then the seller is being a little 'economical' with the truth and knew full well why the satnav was disconnected. In that case I would tend to walk away.

Thanks everyone! You've got to wish people were more truthful. I remarked when the EAS compressor kicked in as it was so so loud, inside and outside. I put it in extended mode and all i could hear was a drone from the EAS pump and the suspension barely moved! not good! Parkers reckon 5.5k, adjusting for mileage more like 6.5-7, certainly not 9k

I think i'll keep my 2.5k P38 as it's had so much work done to it, rather than spend 9k on something which is going to cost me a sh1t-tonne :) Might look again in the summer. I quite like the X5 too but dont want to look like a dealer lol!
