Yes, I think owning a D2 and relying upon a garage to fix it is a recipe for a very unhappy life.
If you own a D2 then you pretty much need to be willing to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in. As long as you own 3 hammers of various sizes, a 1m breaker bar and a Nanocom then you can pretty much fix anything
There are also plenty of them being broken and so there is a plentiful supply of good, used spares that will keep the cost of ownership down.
I've not much tolerance for "garages"
- don't know one I'd trust. D1's are the same, more or less
- just substitute the Nanocom for a MIG welder, and you'll be right. Though I seem to get by with just the one hammer

We bought our 1999 D2 V8 in 2009 with 89735 miles on the clock and a cr*p 4.6 litre engine which had been part of a bodged repair. We didn't pay a fortune for it and we put a new short engine in it.
We have covered just on 90k miles on that engine, it's had a gearbox (water in the oil) and about to have another one (rear bearings gone through heavy towing) but generally it has been pretty damn good, never let us down and faults were sorted properly.
It is a November 1998 build car, so one of the very oldest D2's on the road.
The rear chassis is corroded but hasn't managed any advisories yet.
A straight car with good body and needing chassis work should be practical, as long as you can input your own time and not that of a garage. My youngest son's D2 ES needed a lot of floor welding and chassis work, but I think it was a motorway commute car with lots of salty roads.

And before anyone comments..... all the advisories have been done every year (receipts to prove). Point is, it's a 14 year old car with the newest d2 being 12. They are going to cost to keep in A1 condition so if you can't or don't want to spend money doing that, as others have said, buy something u can keep road worthy yourself, perhaps something that is regularly wax treated meaning you won't have to do welding, but a diagnostic tool, basic tool kit and a Haynes manual.
