Looking for a reg number!

Hi all!
Wondering if anyone could give me some advice? I have an old two door Range Rover chassis and vin plate but no registration number. It came with a project two door which was completed and sold with it's original numbers etc.. I know with other makes you can contact Owners club and they hold a registry with registration numbers. Obviously I don't have enough info to fill out a DVLA V62 with just the chassis plate. Any help please on the best route? Many thanks!

Is there someing like the rr register etc?
I would imagine if it is old enough then someone somewhere will have an interest in that model/range?

I know Heritage at Gaydon hold the definitive register on everything that came out of the factory but not sure how you access the info... send an email, join a club?

There may be some HPI type checks that can be done from VIN only, however due to age it may not have a standard style VIN no

Not sure, but can remember Series 2 club members gaining access to the paper build records, so I guess try and contact Gaydon and see what the score is?

The problem is that Insurance and Hpi databases are often incomplete, I think they get updated every three years and old stuff taken off? Had problems getting stuff Insured in the past depending on which Insurer and their database. Might talk to the Copper in the fam and see if she can do a PNC check?

Just dropped them an email... automated message, "we do not hold records for individual vehicles or offer a valuation service." Looks like Heritage centre might be ny next stop?

I think they have to be careful on that score as the old days of checking out their neighbours cars etc were against GDPR tec.

Yes but every club will have the super memory anorak who will have the answer you need, so if they have a forum join it and ask, might even be on facebook?

Yep, don't think any records can be accessed without good reason these days, my Cuz works on hush hush stuff in the Met... I think finding the reg number is a matter of National security, I feel sure it was previously owned by a foreign chap called Mohammed or Malcolm, who dismantled the car for some reason... could have been making an ISIS tank before being rumbled by the bizzies?

I used a database a few years back to get build specs etc.. for my Series 2a Landy, it seemed straightforward then but now I think details are kept under lock and key... loads of peeps asking "how to" but not many definitive answers? I contacted a RR breaker yesterday about the "worth" of my Vin plate and he offered me £100 without hesitation and a long the old, "not much use really, but I will take it off your hands."

Chassis plate is old as letters didn't start until late 70s and mine is all numbers. I can't even guess when it was last on the road.

I wonder what that would have ended up on?

But as a fair and non honest individual I will offer you the 100 quid and a mars bar, maybe some skittles as well!

I reckon you need to keep searching, could be worth some serious money?
Wonder if there is someone who you could pay to search for the reqd info, like a sort of classic car detective?

If you know anyone friendly at a land rover dealership I would think they would be able to find the original reg easily from their records

My local dealership is quite new, had difficulties trying to get ecu programming done as their resources were limited for a main agent? Will try one further a field.

He did end on "have seen some change hands for £1000" which makes me think it may be worth my time getting a V5 or selling it and then the buyer finding out the car was scrapped or the vin is on another vehicle.

When I worked for vehicle importer we could find reg from vin easily for our cars

Regardless of if there is another car on the same reg/vin, the fact you have the vin and the chassis means you have the legit car.
