I am currently looking at buying a Discovery, gonna be around the £1500 mark.

Have seen a 300tdi Automatic that is looking like the right sort of vehicle, just wondering whether there was anything i should be looking out for i general, and whether there is anything specific to the automatic gearbox etc.

Any info would be much appreciated as this is my first venture into the world of the 4X4 as getting rid of the Focus ST.

Hi and welcome to the madness:)

A few words of caution..

They will only do 30mpg tops on a good day.
You WILL need a good toolkit.
A deep wallet helps.
An understanding wife or girlfriend is useful.
They WILL take over your life ;)
You WILL drive around with an odd grin on your face all the time.
You WILL be able to drive in the snow and ice, and flooded roads.

You will probably never want another motor:)

Oh, and look out for rust, rust, water leaks, smoke, oily brakes and so on :)

Are you good with a spanner?
do you know how to work with engines?
you like to get your hands drity?
you own a MIG welder and know how to weld?

You have loads of money to spend in repairs?

If you answer NO to any of the questions above, forget about it.

If you have answered YES to the last question, go for it

Lol I would have said you explained it to the tea

But on another note you will strangely love it with all it's faults but you wife / GF will hate it ( in my case any way )
 
My gf loves the disco when it's working, but hates it when it breaks down. She threatened to split up when we were waiting for the RAC fo three hours after the third time in a row it had broken on a pay n play :D

She also hates it that i tend to spend more time working on or thinking about the car than, er, other things.

She was well chuffed in the snow though.

Swings and roundabouts :D
 
Well the info so far is that it is gonna be expensive to run and look after, but cant be any worse than the car i already have, which is currently doing 18mpg. so anything better than that is a plus lol.

living on a farm, getting the hands dirty and knowing way around engine s kind of a must so guess it is ok with that one aswell. so think it may be an option.

is there any problenms with auto gearboxes.

Ice huh?

Well, yeh, if you put winter tyres on - bit like a normal car. But, otherwise you have 2 tons sliding around instead of about 1 ton in a car.

Real misconception that 4x4's and specifically land rovers are amazing in ice, can't understand why. If it's snowy i'll go out and help tow people. If it's icey i'll work from home and stay in.

(As evidence to this a followed a 110 down a hair pin road lat january - both of us going sideways and bouncing off the kurb, we both were kitted out for off-roading - but mud tyres are not winter tyres)

Sounds like your just about sorted then :)

Itll definately beat 18mpg but i'm on a manual box not auto so cant comment.

Im not sure if they are that much costy to run, yes they may breakdown a bit more but when they do its usually cheap and quick to fix instead of a big lump of £££ and time in the garage.

Yes i guess the ice comment was a minor balls-up:eek:, as no grip=no grip in any motor. But i would still rather be on the ice in my disco than my mondeo, at least i have 4 wheel engine braking if nothing else, must be some benefit? Also when you end up in a ditch, im pretty certain the disco will walk away afterwards but the mondeo would likely be fu**ed;)

None at all. I ran a TDi 300 auto for 18 months and 16,000mls - towed with it, went to the Sahara desert with it, did my day to day with it and it averaged over the whole period 33mpg !!!

Yeh fair comment, can't deny that... though might have something to do with the condition of my mondeo as much as anything (its been sat in the garden for 6 months now :()
 
I ran an auto 300tdi for 3 years or so and it returned about 25-7 mpg, but then as i've said before these trucks have nothing to prove on the road so you can just cruise around. Have to say it was/still is the best Discovery i owned in terms of repairs and running cost's (ignoring fuel) but i wouldn't want to fill one up now!

so there are no major issues with the automatic, with regards the fuel, is gonna be better than the Focus St i currently have, doing about 18mpg, which is useless in the snow, if it gets a sniff of a hill in the white stuff it just wants to go backwards, and have to say not the most practical with a dog lol.

so looks like maybe getting one of these if i can just get someone to buy the ST off me. fingers crossed.

hope to be an owner member on here soon then. thanks for everyones opinions so far. will post some pics up of the new landy if i get one.
