3.5 days to get to the Saudi port.

short hop over to Sudan, I think they will smash the record if they throw money at the African border crossings. 10 days I reckon.

Have you seen the record the Diesel RR classic held for many years it averaged over a 100mph for so many days on a trip to africa with the Itialian genny engine

1985 The diesel-powered Range Rover 'Bullet' breaks 27 speed records, including a diesel record for averaging more than 100mph for 24 hours.

That is the first I heard of it, can't seem to find any details though, just the land rover summary repeated on loads of different sites...

ooo, Its taken another 2 days to cross the Red Sea and Sudan. maybe my 10 days was optamistic.

5.5 days and they are in Ethiopia.

G

In your defence you did say they should throw money at the border crossings, they are doing it by the book it seems, and spent 4 hours at the Ethiopian Border...

They got unlucky at the Ethiopian border. It took us less than an hour and about the same entering Kenya (albeit from Uganda at a very busy crossing)

Also last year they'd stopped the armed escorts through Northern Kenya but we travelled in daylight so maybe that's why.

If they can get to Gaborone they should cross to Mafikeng and then it's all highway to Cape Town, most of which was resurfaced last year - they could run through Gabarone - CT in as little as 18 hours.

So allowing 20 hours to get to Livingstone, 12 to Gaborone then 18 to CT that's 50 hours so they'll break the record by at least a day.

I guess they'll get in 10am CAT or 9am BST Thursday 28th October.

My guess is they break the record by a day and 22 hours, unless of course the disco dies :D

It sounds ****ed, pretty much everything electrical has failed...

Should have taken a Defender...

Talking to my girlfriend last night about attempting to break their record next year. We've done it once slowly and I can see lots of ways to cut time based on their trip. Her problem is we couldn't use Rhubarb - we'd need at least a third person and it ain't possible in him a '98 90.

I would have fancied a 110 myself, but I think they liked the fact that they can sleep across a disco, maybe the aerodynamics are better ?

Anyway the fact that they have been there for a good while, no one has updated the web site though, means it was a good choice.

I do think time dicking around at borders cost them a day, so the record is up for breaking.

Not sure I'd want to do that drive with a girlfriend though ;)

Did 5 months CT to England with her so 10 days not a problem.

They seemed poorly prepared border wise plus Moyale - Isiolo should have been either done in daylight or better they should have taken the longer but far smoother dirt closer to the Somali border. Safer and quicker and mapped on Tracks4Africa (which doesn't give times like the native Garmin app)

Yep but in those 5 months she probably had a sleep every day.... I pity the fool that gets in a car with a woman who has no proppa sleep for 11 days :D

Does that make me sound sexist ?

Well looks like they did it!

The new record now stands at 11 DAYS 14 HOURS 11 MINUTES this is 1 Day 18 Hours 37 Minutes inside the previous record.

Now THAT sounds like a challenge to me. I would really want to do this, but sod it wont take a Land Rover as somehow I dont think my Series (or the RRC for that matter) would be able to beat the record. I will take something faster, like a kitted up GT4. On the very hard stuff I would have to take it slightly easier, but on the not so rough, I could make up the speed. What do you reckon?

You want something that can maintain a good average speed in all conditions , so really has to be 4wd with good ground clearance and suspension .

Yeah...which I why I was thinking of a rally type 4x4...but perhaps slightly more jacked up, good under protection. So not brilliant ground clearance but you would make up for it on speed when the going wasnt as twisty. A Bowler would be nice if I could afford it....dream on!
