I am intrigued with the use of the Landrover Locking wheel nuts. Do they prevent wheels being stolen?

If they are out there to get at your wheels/tyres then they are likely to have a set of the sockets to undo most of the Landrover wheel nuts. So would it be advisable to replace with a after market kit or just not bother with them. I only ask as when I did my brake pads a few months back I found the locking wheel nuts a PITA and I could imagine they would be a right pain if the weather was bad and I was in a hurry.

They don't stop the wheels being stolen. They help slow the theft down and also increase the noise level. If you don't want em take em off. It's your choice. I can get around 99% of locking wheel nuts in under 5 mins without using the key. In most cases I do need to make plenty of noise though.

yeh, as ratty says.

mate bought a disco and didnt come with the key, I got all the wheel nuts off but had to make some noise

I further that argument. Got 4 wheels off a defender that had locking nuts but he had lost the keys using only a chisel and hammer. Could have been even quicker but I was trying not to cause any damage to the alloys.

yup... a welder.

Problem is a wheel has to be easy to take off as it will need changing from time to time... there is a balance between cost and time to take it off and 'nickability'

I would say locking wheel nuts, like all security, is an excellent deterant, however, if someone wants your wheels they're going to take them.

In the case of a spare, a good locking cover will be a deterrent but a thick chain through it is best. Opportunists aren't going to steal your wheels from your car. Not many people wonder around with a jack in their pocket.
