Hello good people! A quick question that has been posed by two friends helping me with my Discovery engine swap - both of whom are very experienced but not with Landys.

They would like to know (and so would I!), what is that little wheel next to the diff on the front axle for? Both the 200 and the 300 Tdi have it. Is it something to do with keeping it off the ground somehow when offroading?

Cheers!
Steve

Does it have a wire cable/strop attaching to it? If it does it's a vibration/harmonics damper.

its a balance weight / damper.

Yes, that sounds like the one. Harmonics damper? I wonder how that works? Mine is covered in oil because of the Nissan engine I chucked out of it!

The guys helping me with the engine and 'box change were baffled by it, and both are experienced mechanics who have worked with bigger machinery, agricultural machines as well as cars and vans. They put it down to the strangeness of Land Rovers and those crazy Brits! Mind you, one of them is all about Italian cars - if it isn't Italian it's not a car, that's his philosophy. Even his tractors are Italian!

Well, whatever it is and whatever it does, is there anything I'm supposed to do to make sure it's ok, any kind of servicing? Or is it enough that it's just there?

Cheers,
Steve
