I have a P38 petrol 4.0.

How can i tell if a liner has slipped in the engine?

Thanks,
J

When starting from cold there is a strange noise, sounds like a knocking, that comes from the drivers side of engine. Sounds to be just below plugs.

Tickover is rough but improves significantly as engine warms...

is it over heating at all, lose of power white smoke out of it. only asking as would not want you to strip it down to find nothing..

Its not overheating.

There is no major water loss although I do top up about a pint or so every couple of months, say 3000 mles. Recently did nearly 1000 miles in a week with no significant loss. Just kep an eye on it from time to time.

A bit of white smoke when cold but it is cold weather at the moment..

Cheers,
J

it could just be noisey tappet or follower, whats you oil like does it need changing. if it was slipped linner you would be loosing water, and prob overheating. hope that helps..

Thanks J,

It probably is due an oil change.

I will do that for starters.

What oil do you recommend?

J

Slipped liner symptons include

Missfire from cold
Loads of white smoke
Top hose rock hard in no time

Trust me I know !! :(

Thanks Javars,

Are we talking serious amounts of white smoke and does it dissapear quickly as engine warms, also as a guide how quick will water reservoir empty hence overheating?

White smoke would go (initially) as soon as it warmed up but mine deteriorated so fast I stopped using it so there wouldnt be any further damage, interestingly the guy who rebuilt it said that in his opinion (20 years land rover tech) the p38 v8s dont suffer head gasket failure in the true sense, but they suffer with a lack of seal around the top of the liner, which is why so many have multiple failures.
