Like a fool Ive.... spigot bush!!

I think ive made a lot of work for myself i converted my disco 2 td5 from auto to manual and i wasnt aware of the spigot bush in the end of the crank. i have no idea if their was one in their or not.??? Maybe their was one even though it was an auto? Does it matter if i havnt fitted one or their isnt one in the crank? do i rearly need to pull the box again and fit one? Dan
 
Right I need a td5 expert here is their a spigot bush in the end of that crank or not you may need to zoom the picture in to see better but it would be great if somone could tell me if their is one in their or not and same me pulling the box off. Dan. Please help me. You may need to copy and paste it to zoom more please someone say yes please please please let their be one

alright there,
i just been on the phone for you about this, it is important and not wise to do without it,
i forgot to change mine, during a clutch change, but the old one still remains, this is a manual car.
were not sure about an auto box, but because a torque converter bolts onto the flywheel, rather than having an input shaft through the flywheel it leads us to think that there is no need for it.
its purpose will be to take up any wear on the input shaft and crank shaft, supporting the input shaft, rather than doing costly damage.

Why would there be, does the torque converter need one?? it dont does it it bolts to the flexi plate, unless landrover wastes money on a bush it dont need.

And if there aint one it's a gearbox back out or it kills the clutch.

I have seen some with the bearing in the flywheel, take it you never noticed.

Cant you get an exploded view or phone the dealer they will tell you.
 
thanks for that GOTONEATLAST in the picture ive put up you can kinda see something in the crankshaft i think but i am not sure if its the bush or not all im thinking is if this is a fairly tight fit in the crank??? maybe it would have been fitted too all cranks from new? regardless off the transmission??? try have a look at the pic please Dan

i really wouldn't like to hazard a guess here,
david451 is clued up on this, i know you don't wanna here it, but it could be gearbox off again.
i'll have a nose at my RAVE manwell.
 
Sorry to have to say you must take it out and fit the spigot bearing.

If you don't, the gearbox input shaft will waggle about, and that will cause terrible clutch problems, and probably wreck the main bearing where the gearbox input shaft passes into the box.

Remember, this spigot bearing is a bearing, and every time you de-clutch, the rotation speeds of the crankshaft and the gearbox input shaft become different.

Worst case would be sitting in gear, clutch pedal down, loads of revs.

You are inviting disaster if you drive the car without the gearbox input shaft properly supported and centred in the crankshaft.

Tell you what charlesY, I've done it myself and you sit there trying to talk yourself out of taking the gearbox out when you know you have to.

It's worth a call to a dealer tho just on the wild off chance there is one in there.
 
I have had a look at RAVE, and it shows just one engine, making no mention of differences between autos and manuals. It clearly shows the spigot bearing. With any luck they just bang one in to every crankshaft. You may be lucky!

Go for gold.

Try it.

VERY GENTLY!

Gearbox in neutral. KEEP OFF THE CLUTCH! Leave it UP till the engine is running.
Be ready to STOP the engine bloody quick if you hear bad noises.

Start the engine. Let it tick over. If there's a bad noise stop it smartish.

Still on tickover and no more, gently shove the clutch pedal down. If it makes any sort of bad noise STOP ENGINE immediately.

If you can get the clutch down, try to engage first gear. If it does, and there are still no bad noises, see if it will drive a few yards. Try reverse a few yards.

If it does all this and still no bad noises, and the clutch seems to work, well, I know what I would be thinking!

Cant see fookal mate best to call the dealer, or go down in person and ask the question. Or if you know a breakers then thats another option if they have the engine out.

If you start driving it about without support on the spiggot shaft it will take the centre out the clutch and because the spiggot shaft aint held central the seal goes aswel ****ing all the oil all over yer nice new clutch assembley.

Dont drive it anywhere until you know for certain.

autos dont usually have spigot bushes due to the torque converter but manuals definately need this bush otherwise there is only the clutch plate that supports the shaft! the bush keeps the input shaft true otherwise the shaft will destroy your clutch and probably the gearbox! i would fit one before it costs you a **** load of dosh for the sake of a couple of quid for the bush and a few hours labour.
 
I have to say it certainly looks like there's a bush in that crankshaft. I didn't pay a lot of attention but that is a Auto-box flywheel and it DOES seem to have a bush!

The spigot bearing is a plain phosphor-bronze bush (sintered bronze?) so all it looks like is a little bit of tube. There won't be balls or rollers - just a bit of tube. I reckon that's what we can see.

I stand by my advice - but now with more confidence!
A gentle careful try is called for, and PLEASE let us know what happens!
