Hopefully going to see a d2 tomorrow it’s cheap but it’s just had the cluch changed and the owner said whoever did it forgot to change the spigot bush and it grinds when pressing the cluch . I’ve done enough work on discos that I can do the job myself but my bigger concern is that I’ve got a 1 hour 20 minute drive home in it. Do you think I can make it Lol.

The only problem in that case is the sound nothing else, you can drive it so for ages if you can live with that noise. Only use genuine bush

I cannot see the spigot bush being responsible for a grinding noise when using the clutch.

I’m assuming if it is the bush they must have damaged it or something right because why would a old one what was fine before as far as I know start causing problems immediately after a clutch change

I think he said more of a screaming noise actually . It could be something else I’m really not to sure.
Screaming would suggest release bearing related.

LR spigot bush is pretty **** proof, I have changed a few LR clutches, and only once changed the spigot bush.

Do not forget the td5 has a dual mass flywheel.

+1 re the release bearing especially if it ONLY occurs on depressing the pedal. The PO should have changed it when changing the clutch.

Duuhhh!!!

Even if it seem to have no logical explanation the worn spigot bush noise when the clutch is depressed is very common for R380 boxes, happens mainly from cold and usually worst in reverse... happened to me twice and i've seen in in many other cases too without being any other issue hence the statement in it's description https://www.jgs4x4.co.uk/defender-discovery-tdi-td5-flywheel-spigot-bearing-bush/ ...and this is not a marketing scam as it's real, appears in most seller's descriptions:

"Flywheel spigot bearing bush that fits into the flywheel and supports gearbox main shaft. Often overlooked but should be replaced when ever the clutch is renewed as this can often develop an annoying noise after the clutch has been replaced unless the spigot bush is replaced."

might have something to do with it's lubrication https://lofclutches.com/blog/product-news/a-new-heavy-duty-spigot-bush-for-tdi-td5-and-series/ ... if it wasnt an issue they wouldnt have bothered with it IMO

When I worked a MOT tester we had a Lady came in she said the car has a weird noise when she pressed the clutch, we asked her to start the car and put it in gear sure enough there was a load noise, so we popped the bonnet and asked her to do it again , once the bonnet was up we soon found the problem…every time she pushed the clutch pedal the fan moved forward and hit the radiator, the complete crank was moving 1.5-2 inch, we dropped the sump but the engine was totalled as the thrust bearing were gone and the crank was eating its way through the bearing

Didn’t end up buying the discovery anyway surprise surprise the chassis was rotten despite the guy saying he’d had it all done. Also suspected the problem was bigger than just the spigot Bush as you had to force it into gear and the noise was extremely loud. Even made a noise just driving along

This was definitely coming from the gearbox sounded like one of them straight cut race car boxes lol

Glad I learn about this anyway gotta change my cluch soon so I will definitely be changing that too lol

Get yourself a cheap slide hammer, and grind down one of the hooks to fit inside the spigot. You will get it out in seconds. Dont bother with the socket and grease method....

The actual clutch change is simple, its just mauling out the transfer box and gearbox.......
