lights

hello all just a question i would like answered for my own piece of mind.
unlike most cars iv owned the freelander lights dipped and main beam
can be turned on with out the ign being on.
wye is this.
just seems a step backward. but if there is a good reason i will be amazed

Purely because they are not relayed through the ignition, no fancy light your way to your front door either, just a buzzer when you get out and leave them on.
