How do I tell if the lift pump on a 300 tdi is working?. I tried pumping it but nothing there. Its an auto.

You need to have the cam in the right position. Turn the engine over by a 1/4 turn, then try the lift pump, you will know when the cam is right as you will feel resitance on the pump lever.

I've just had mine replaced, the pump lever would work-ish when on the cam but had no pressure at all otherwise.
It took ages to bleed the fuel filter and finally it gave up trying.

you could take the pipe off the filter and turn the engine over and see if fuel gets pumped out.

when changing my filter i always fill the new one with fuel before fitting saves bleeding it.

Had to do the same thing couple of days ago. Filter thought that 30miles off from starting our holiday to block up lol. Filling the filter is always the best way, either that or a sore thumb

Thanks for the advice. How do I turn the engine over 1/4 turn with an auto ?

You give the key a quick flick on and off !!

If in any doubt just replace the lift pump, Paddocks do a Delphi OEM pump for £17 plus tax and takes about 10 mins to fit.

Make a really good note of where the two pipes go or you could put them on the wrong way round and fart about for ages before you realise - ask me how I know???:eek::eek:

I gave the key a quick flick a couple of times until I felt very slight resistance in the second half of travel of the pump lever. Is that normal or should there be more resistance ?
