like almost everyone else here i bought my landy second hand, i'm now thinking of fitting a lift kit for an expedition that we are planning. thing is i don't know if it already has one fitted, is there a way of telling? ride height, markings on springs etc, also can someone recommend a good one?

i've done it.....unless u go the whole hog and buy the lot be careful..trewey is a a grumpy miserable old bastid but has a good posting about all the failures that happened after fitting a kit....do a search for it.
 
If your off planning an expedition then keep everything standard. If something breaks in the middle of how knows where how you going get it fixed.

That said you may need heavy duty springs to maintain your ride height with the extra weight on board. These will give the impression of a lift when the vehicle is empty.
 
okay point taken, do you think i should be fitting heavy duty, we are planning across land to singapore and after australia
 
thanks after reading treweys post am looking at heavy duty springs etcetera and bigger tyres, currently 235/85s, anybody know how big i can go without lifting body. LEE

Keep it standard and fit very good tyres. I have heard that doubling up on shock absorbers (two per wheel) is a good idea if you are planning long periods over rough tracks and heavy duty springs to handle the extra weight. If you are plannining on putting stuff on a roof rack then a lift kit will reduce the vehicle stability even more. Which will be fine until you have to traverse a slope or swerve for a goat etc.

Are you planning on both Jungle and Desert terrain, if so bear in mind these have different requirements.

I'm also expedition planning but so far only in Europe, but I'm doing a lot of reading & listening. Australia is meant to be tough, hence why they seem to manufacture the vast majority of up market off-roading shockers there.

Lift kit = higher centre of gravity, 9/10 Less articulation, more unstable landy( more likey to roll)
never had a problem with my lift kit,its been on a year now,springs have never dislocated,doesnt seem any less stable to me,even on the winch challenges i compete in ive never had any problems..

if you want a lift kit fit one,dont let a couple of peoples misfortunes with lift kits put you off..

:clap2: .....total agree. I have a 2 inch lift and a winch on my Discovery. Also done challenge and trials events.

You can't just do a lift in isolation. The suspension is a major part of the vehicle.
