I cant decided what bumper to throw onto my project, and for purposes of getting it tested etc, am I legal to drive around with no front bumper?

PS I did a few searches, but opinions seem to differ per vehicle type. So is anyone here driving around without a front bumper?

Cheers

I read ona classic Mini forum that some MOT testers fail Mini's with the bumpers removed and some don't - I'd think that's the same with Land Rovers hence the confusion.

I'm sure you could pick a standard bumper up for next to nothing

£50 notes for a new bumper from certain suppliers, £50 quid for a test, if it already has an MOT that will not tun out for a few weeks, get it tested, if it fails then buy and fit a new bumper and take it back, I do think that the retest should cost you anything.

I drove for a few weeks with no bumper , may have been lucky but the old bill did not pull me.

AFAIK, its about sharp edges, really there isnt any without the bumper, so maybe its alright anyway

I think if it has a bumper as standard it must have one to get an mot,

One thing I was thinking of trying was a plate between the front jack mounts to hold the number plate and no bumper, mainly just to see how it looks. Im not sure if this could be considered a bumper or not in that case...

It is if you have sharp edges protruding out from the front. My front jack mounts are rusted a fair bit so I wouldnt want to be caught driving around some main roads with it. I don't think it would be as much of a problem if there is less sharp rust, but its so easy to slap a bumper on that its worth just having something there.

If you want a very rusty bumper, you can have mine for free if you pick it up :p

@tripp, thanks I have a bumper Im just not really keen on how it looks. I just spoke to a friend who can chop things up and hopefully put them back together properly.

I think the plan is to take my bumper (rage with daytime running lights) and shorten it so its just proud of the mounts and retains the rounded edges, so will be about 6 inches wider than the mounts on each side.

It could be time to fire up photoshop before I do it!
