Right, I, need to tow my RRS tdvs 3.0 about 2 miles to the garage for repairs. How do you go about it. I have seen a few bits of info about manually selecting neutral with the red pull lever under the cup holders in the center console but not much else of any help. Most info says do not tow it as you cannot disengage the transfer box as it is in permenant 4 wheel drive? I see the vehicle has a towing eye dead center under the front bumper so it must be able to be towed in an emergency. Any ideas.

Two miles at less than 30mph will be fine with the transmission in neutral, the transfer box has a mechanical oil pump so it'll be lubricated OK. I assume the engine won't run?

In case you don't have access to the manual, the relevant pages are attached.

Thank, you, so, much for replying. Yes strange issue, engines strays and runs, full revs no problem but once driving as engine warms the engine turns off. Sometimes it does a stutter first. Always starts up again no problem but then as soon as you put into drive it switches off. I had to drive in reverse for half a mile to get home. I thought it was fuel starvation so put a new fuel filter on but no different. Got no warnings on the dash display either. I saw a few posts saying it can will be due to the gearbox oil and filters needing changing. I was sceptical but the bloke had same issues. I am getting.

Is the emergency park release underneath the cup holders in the center console? I saw a YouTube video earlier showing a red lever to pull up so you could move the vehicle but it was not clear weather it was to select neutral or disengage the emergency parking brake. Also it was on a slightly newer RRS than, mine which had a round push button gear knob. Mine has an actual gear lever.

In that case, the best thing to do is to start the engine, disengage the park brake & put the gear selector in neutral, keep the engine running whilst towing if you can as it will help with steering and braking. The release cable you refer to is for the park brake - although the manual pages I've posted are for a later model, the information on towing is still correct. I don't know of any transmission issue that would cause the symptoms you describe and I'd want to see engine & transmission fault codes before even guessing as to what the likely cause would be...

Edit:- is it the 3.0l with the 'electronic' gear selector or the 'proper' cable operated selector, which would be a 2.7l or 3.6l?

I'm not sure if it's electronic or cable. It is the 3.0 ltr. it has a gear lever and not the round button. I am getting the codes read first to have a laugh then once it's fixed it can have the gear box service.

It's similar but not got the silver button for P. I will photo it in the morning so you can see it.

OK, so it must be a 2009-13 TDV6 with a ZF 6HP26 transmission, which is cable operated. In which case, the guidance above is all you need to do "the best thing to do is to start the engine, disengage the park brake & put the gear selector in neutral, keep the engine running whilst towing if you can as it will help with steering and braking"
If you had the later one, there is a danger that the gearbox would drop into park if the engine stalled and the road speed dropped below 3mph, in your case, this cannot happen but obviously without the engine running the power steering will become heavier and the brake vacuum assistance will deplete with every press of the brake pedal.

That sounds pretty good news, so I don't have to mess about with the EBR lever. Hopefully diagnostics with point us in the right direction. It generally is a decent car, it's only done 126k and has had loads of work done prior to me owning it for the last two years. Always the way, I only put a full, set of new tyres on it 4 weeks ago
