leeking diff

chemical metal will work, but you will need to drain the oil and thouroughly de-grease and dry it before applying it. then wait for it to cure, before re-filling the diff.

better still, if its a small crack and the rest of the metal is solid, weld it up.

the diff pan is mild steel, the axle casing is cast.
a mig will be ideal, if it's the pan that's cracked.
you can get replacement pans for about 35 quid, but it's a ball-ache of a job to fit a new one.

aint gonna b able to get a pic up today. a rock has hit the front diff from the front, its been dinted in and oil leaking though. the axel and bottom of diff are ok, it just the front.

was leaking wen i got the car, diff must b low on oil by now so now is the time to get it sorted b4 i have other probs.. diff guard was the first thing i fitted

i fink that just means peeps aint listening......:D

and secondly - if yu fit them - make sure they are cleaned out THOROUGHLY after every trip - cos they trap mud which makes the pans rot like mad:(

by front - do you mean the bit towards the front of the car - coz thats the diff pan - mild steel - to do a good job its a diff out jobby and wash the inside with petrol to degrease it. then yu can either use plastic metal or weld. welding is betterer if yu have a choice. its the ideal time to replace the leaky diff nose oil seal too ;).

ye thats the bit i meant.. thanks for the advice.

i aint really got the time or skills to take the diff out. was really hoping for a leave on the car jobby. can it be cleaned and then welded without removing? or just patched up for now until i get the time?? i know that isnt ideal
