I have just fitted some LED running lights to my 2003 Td6 Range Rover, I wired them directly to my side lights. When i turn the ignition on the LED lights flash alternately from side to side for about 10 seconds. Then the LED lights flash alternatly left / right every 30 secs. Can anybody tell me why this is happening and how i can stop it. Also does anybody know if you can replace the original side light bulbs with LED ones? If so can anyone recomend a supplier in the Uk.

Hi mate, the rapid flashing could be to do with the MOSFETS within the LCM (light check module) the MOSFETS are transistors within the LCM that detect faults e.g. Overloads, load interruptions and short circuits. If the system detects a fault/bulb failure then the LCM sends a PWM (pulse width modulation or flash to you and me) output which is switched on and off rapidly to provide bulb emulation when a bulb fails. Do you have any bulb failure or warning messages on the dash? With regards to changing the standard bulbs to LEDs then I can confirm that this is not possible without modification to the wiring to the lights to include a resitor because LEDs draw a lot less current than standard bulbs and cause the LCM to think a bulb has blown and displays error messages on the dash, the resistor increases the power draw, but can cause other problems because they get very hot and are known to fail. This is the same issue people have when they do the 2010 LED headlight upgrade, the computer thinks the bulbs have failed and displays fault messages.

Hope this helps,

Matt

Anything to do with the bulb-check circuitry which wouldn't normally light a filament bulb, but is triggering the leds?

Could be this, the LCM runs a self check using the MOSFETS to detect the condition of the bulbs even when the lights are not switched on, the way it works is it briefly switches the lamps on for approximately 1 millisecond which is insufficient to illuminate the standard bulb but may be enough to light the LEDs

Thank you very much mattstevenson2005 for your response, that sounds exactly what my car is doing, i will forget the LED's for the sidelights then, as i dont want to mess to much with these complicated electrics.

Thanks once again its much appreciated :):)

Hi, I have fitted Led's in place of the old bulbs in the side lights (and i think they look great), I do get the strobe effect when switching on the ignition but apart from that all seems fine with no error messages etc, the reason i do not get error messages is i fitted multi led bulbs that have a higher resistance (so not extra resisitor is required) they simply plug and go in the standard wiring. I got mine from www.autoledshop.com type 501 LED 4 Layer tower. Of course I can't garantee they will work for you but they worked great for me. Hope this is helpfull. Nick

Any pics? :)

Helo everybody, I'm currently upgrading my 56 reg Range Rover headlights to 2010 LED headlights.
Main beam works, low beam works but no LED's either side lights or indicators work.
