Thinking of getting some LED bulbs for the break lights. Bit brighter, bit safer maybe:)

Anyone tried them? (Thinking of the 24 LED versions) and can anyone explain how they would work as rear light and break light and the OEM bulb has two fillaments? Are half the LEDs on with lights and the other half with brakes?

Also, can anyone tell me if the rear fog bulb is the same fitting (380 1157 BAU15D) so I don't have to go outside in the cold with a screw driver:eek:

hmmn, not sure but there might be a construction and use issue here.

dunt the lamps used have to be the same type as originally type approved on the vehicle. if the light is designed for a filament lamp, then it has to be fitted with a filament lamp and so on.

certainly an issue with upgrading to HID headlights, think it might be the same for LED lamps. LED's have poor directional spread compared to filament lamps, so will be less effective when viewed from an angle.

I have heard this aswell about LED bulbs being used in non LED light units, The problem with the HID lights is that they need to adjust there hight automaticly when car is loaded (or have self leveling suspension) after market ones wont have this, also all vehicles fitted with these lights have headlight washers, lenses have to be kept clean.

have fitted led lights had one dud (I repaired badly soldered joint ) went for 36 led on brake and tail lamps brighter than original bulbs but have to make sure they fit through lens cover and on single pin connections when you fit them observe the correct polarity and pin configuration (offset staggered etc).
if you intend fitting them to your indicators you will require load resistors( 25ohm 25watt type) wired in parallel across right and left circuit. would effect the indicator flash rate if sold on and the new buyer reverted back to normal lamps so leave a note in fuse box or update flasher to electronic type you may find the front side light led will vary in diameter so make sure they will fit through lens cover

there crap an don't work in defender's i got a set an thay will light up but no brake lights so sent them back the person sent me another set to try an them one's did not light up but brake lights seem to work  cheep chinese crap like there car's:D

I fitted em to my last 2 landys but got warned by plod that they were illegal (unless the vehicle is pre 1986) after I broke a rear light lense and he saw em. Never had a problem with them not working though. They are definately brighter at night but I rekon they aint as bright during daylight hours.

I would not believe what the old bill said years ago got stopped by plod when I fitted Hella high level brake lights to my golf in 85 told they were illegal and told to disconnect them on the spot told him he have a lone wait think he was annoyed that he could not catch the car that sped past me so I was his next victim.
They were mount to comply we European legislation the correct height and distance apart ,decided to enquire at Birmingham central police station and not one of our law enforcement officers could confirm that they where illegal.
Later article printed later in the Evening Mail confirmed they were legal and the problem at the time were drivers fitting rear fog lights as high level brake light on the parcel shelf which were illegal .
so never take the their word without checking elsewhere seem strange that most new cars manufactures are starting to fit them and take a look at the new golf indicator are legal mounted in the brake light where you can just make out they are indicators what Pratt though that idea up .rant over

I did check up on the subject and found that for once the copper was right. From memory it was ok to fit an led light unit in place of a filament light unit and it was ok to fit an led bulb in place of a filamant bulb on a pre 1986 vehicle but it was illegal to fit an led bulb to a filamant fitting on a post 1986 vehicle.
