Leaky roof seal question

Hi Folks,

I am guessing that many D2 owners have now fixed the leaky roof syndrome, so would like to ask a question relating to putting everything back together again.

I will reseal the drain pots and also seal the outer plastic trim to the outside of the roof. But what about the metal frame the fixes to the inside of the roof and holds everything together?

Does this joint between the metal under frame and inside of the roof need sealing?

I ask this as my rear roof was a bit tricky to remove due to all the AC ducting, and I see this being the same putting it back in there. So any seal I put on first is going to go all over the place!

Any thoughts?

If the frame to roof and the glass to frame seals are good that's all u have to do.

The glass seal looks OK, but am taking it out tomorrow and giving a good clean and grease. The outer plastic frame to roof seal was virtually non existent. I good squeeze of roof and gutter sealant will fix that.

Inside looked really clean but I saw no seal at all between the metal frame and roof, made me wonder if it was missed from new? I suppose putting something in there is better than nowt. Would stop water flowing back over the roof if parked facing uphill?

I see what your saying on an inner roof to sunroof frame seal, and it is an interesting thought. I would think this would only be an issue if your drains were not operating properly. But in any event, a seal here would be a backup measure. Good thinking mate.

So how will any water reach the drains if both seals are intact? Only by tilting the wet glass.
Why are both drains at the front of the sunroof only?, therefore useless if the vehicle is facing up an incline.

My thoughts exactly! One at front and one rear would have been much better. But we have to deal with what we have.

I would say water can staill get down into the bottom tray via the outside edge of the rubber seal under the glass? My glass is still screwed into the frame so dont know how it looks under there as yet to be honest.

I will remove the glass tonight and stick a few pics up if anyone is keen to see how it all goes togther?

By the way, when it rains here it really rains!!
