was told today that my series 3 petrol i should be mixing some heating oil with some engine oil and pouring it in with my petrol to compensate the fact that it wasnt designed for lead free petrol is this true or is he winding me up

Never heard of that one. Sounds like bull****. In fact I would go so far as to say it was bull****.
Don't know petrol landrovers but with bikes we used to say wait till you notice the exhaust tappet clearances closing up then come back; no body ever did.

I've seen in one of the heritage commercial magazines that someone adds a bit of diesel to petrol to compensate for the engine not designed for running on unleaded. It was for an old American pickup from the 40s. Apparently doing this works.

its only exhaust seats that need changing to run on unleaded ,but its takes a very long time before it becomes necessary to do them ,just run it on std petrol

and you'll not be happy with the outcome of being found to be using kerosene/28 sec/heating oil as a road fuel
