Law changes on veg oil?

Led to believe that you can now use 2500 litres of veg oil in the uk before having to pay tax on it. Got the info from a German web site who are suppliers of veg converstion kits, is this true.
Also i have a 300tdi (97) and am planning running a 70/30 mix, (70D/30V) of pure veg oil straight from Tesco's!, have read a thew threads but can someone give me a definitive answer...
1. Can this be done
2. Do i need to add any additives, i.e white spirit
3. Can i just pour it straight into the tank
4. Will it kill my Disco!
5. Should i change filters first?

Apologies if im upsetting anyone by asking old questions, i just dont want to kill my Disco!

buy spare filters and keep em in the car, as the veg will remove old fossil deposits and cause clogging..

1,yes 2,no 3,yes 4,no 5, no change them after a few thou or do as Batty ses and carry aspare one wiv ya. Make sure that you clean/empty out your sediment bowl first as this is where the crap will already be if it has not bin cleaned afore (this clogs first on Disco's)

I've been thinking about using veg oil recently, is it significantly cheaper than diesel?
It sounds like Tesco's is cheapest you can buy retail, how much is it then?

56 ppl in individual litre bottles or 71ppl if you buy 3 litre bottles. Good idea, it'll make yer exhaust smell nice!

So is there a bit of a distinctive smell that comes with using it then, will I smell like a chippy?
Not that I'd really care at that price, I'm driving it not behind it.

The smell will fill your cab every time you reverse (well it does in a tratta anyway!)

The 56p bottles are a right faff, but it is quite a saveing - you can tell the greenies that you're getting 50+MPG on non-renewable fossil fuels if you go to 50/50, which will run absolutely fine in cold (uk) weather compared to their smug 40mpg weirdo cars!

That's what yer meant to say.

No, it's the non-renewable fossil fuels they're getting 50mpg on coz 25 of the mpg are done on renewable non-fossil fuels (veg oil)! I knew what i meant!

I don't think SVO falls under the new laws though, as its not technicaly bio diesel - a lot of time and effort goes into the research of these fuels - they didn't waste all that time on bio diesel for nothing.

Veg oil will work, but be aware someone had reason to turn SVO into bio in the first place so bare that in mind - I have some lengthy posts somewhere here about this - search.

the cheapest way to buy at tesco is KTC cooking oil in 15 litre cans or in 10L boxes.
The only down side is at low temps you can get solids drop out and they dont reabsorb untill you heat it all up, in the mean time they block filters pretty quick and often .
Due to the glycerine content, at low combustion temps (ie at start up) you can get gumming of the compression rings leading to blowby
In summer you can go 50/50 no probs but I give it a miss in the freezing season and buy B100 from a local bio outlet

Lots written on this elsewhere on the forum. I'd worry about putting any more than minimal quantity of SVO into a Disco 2 with high fuel pressure common rail engine. Seems to be fine for all those people running TDis though.

How much is KTC cooking oil?

Disco 2 (TD5) does not have a high pressure common rail engine.

TD5 injection system is particularly good at using BIO and SVO as long as the fuel is CLEAN, meaning well filtered BEFORE it gets tipped into the Disco's tank.

only put in 8ltr of diesel and 2 ltrs of SVO, done 50 miles and all is well!

50-50 will be fine in winter (once you get the hang of putting "food" in yer tank!), 70-30 or 80-20 oil to diesel will do in summer.

Dont believe what the people wo make veg oil heaters try and tell you!

My god you are right about CR (CharlesY you are infuriatingly ALWAYS right. I give up ). However there have been a number of posts suggesting that the TD5 injectors use a particularly high pressure fuel system, and that this might cause problems with SVO. I use bio in mine with no problem, but haven't dared try SVO for this reason. Will now reconsider. Can anyone tell me what make the fuel pump is? Some are said to be more suited to SVO than others.

Im just worried im gonna do some damage to my Disco which is why i put in 80D-20V, must say its been running great! whats the main things to look out for problem wise?
