I believe they reduced the Bhp on the thor to reduce some of the issues.

it has 225Bhp and better mpg than the 4.0 ??

Is this a Car or engine only query?

Hi Jay-4.6HSE
It's an engine query. I had heard that the problems with the older 4.6 & 4.0 ltr had been resolved with this engine eg head gaskets and liner problems. So I was seeking some reasurance before a purchase.
Thanks for the input

If you read you ...and i did a lot before you buy it will help, people on here will give good advice to (probs to look for).however all p38s at some time give trouble.you will find however on this, other forum.and from books if you can run to it and you dont get put off getting a best then the 2000 onwards 4.6 is the way to go....but be warned IT WILL AT SOME TIME LET YOU DOWN.

the advantage of the older cars is that most of the work has been done already!!

obviously if a part generally fails at 70000km and your purchase is at 50000km then its likely you will have to do it.

by and large the p38 can be a pain in the ass but there are fixes to most problems and by now most of them are well documented and fixes can be done yourself.

the best thing to do is ask a mechanic who knows a bit about landrover in general to go have a look, you will have to pay for his time but it could save you £££££ in the long run!!!
