What the hell is the difference between 2 pins and 4 pins anyway? What are these pins, where are they, and what do they do?

just the strength of diff gears and case 2 pin is actually one shaft holding the 2 diff planet gears ,4 pin has 2 shafts or a cross shaped shaft holding 4 diff planet gears, diff carrier is also a lot stronger

top right pic has 2 pin on left 4 pin on right

Oh Boy, what next? :)

So, I have to be very careful how I place the order with Ashcroft; if I ask for two 4 pin diffs, I might get two rear ones?

If I ask for one front and on rear, I will get a 4 and a 2 pin!

I'll think on ....

rears do fit in the front its the crown wheel and pinions that are handed, though if you fit a rear cw/p in front it runs on rear of teeth like disco or defender

Right, if I understand, the diffs are interchangeable physically, but the crown wheel and pinions run differently?

What does this mean? Is this a bad thing?

Cheers.

up until p38 lr used the same cw/p front and back ,the one in the front driving on the rear of the teeth ,whether thats an issue depends on usage similar with 4 pin, though a high mileage cw/p isnt going to like running on opposite side of teeth
