lane exchange

Had an idea I thought ide throw it out there to see the response.
What about a thread which allows peeps to exchange lanes from all over the country or even for anyone wishing to visit an area to meet up with "locals" for a days lanning.
Iam not talking of a public list of lanes all over the country, but a base for anyone who wants to venture further afield.
What I was thinking is something on these lines for example.

Iam off to Lincolnshire the end of may and would love to do area lanes round mumby way.
Anyone can help?

Anyone could respond and either lane information given, or even an offer of a guided tour.
This could then be reciprocated in derbyshire.

Has anything like this been tried before? Good bad idea?

Thought that was what GLASS was for ...

We generally discourage the sharing of lane location info between people who don't know each other due to the number of muppets that drive them without respect or consideration for others.

Sad but true.

Having said that there are many active groups around the country and most are happy to show others around

Thats kinda what i mean not letting just anyone have lane info, weve all seen fred with 2 posts asking for lanes, but if your on here with plenty of posts, peeps can seen your genuine.
glass, yea, but you have to join etc. i was thinking a forum like this is here to help etc.
it just means anyone wishing to do lanes in other parts of the country can help each other out.as beasty said, plenty of official and unoficial groups around the country, so having a place on the forum might make it easier for genuine people to contact others.

Personally I think the the £30 odd quid for GLASS membership is a small price to pay for an organisation fighting to keep out lanes open and have access to Trailwise - the National Database of Greenlanes, especially when you factor in the cost of fuel and generally the cost of running a Land Rover.

If GLASS is not working for you - myself and other GLASS members would like to know why....

and as mentioned earlier most people only share info with people they know....becuase of all the reasons stated previously.....

Agree with previous posters regarding GLASS and if you're a biker, don't forget the TRF do a great deal to keep the lanes open for all to enjoy! They need cash to succeed in the fight against nimbys.

Recently rode Sarn Helen with confidence in the knowledge that the TRF won a case regarding this important route and maintaining its vehicular access.

Passed a D3 on pretty much road biased tyres at the river crossing too!

I'll happily vouch for xrizlax if some of you kind folks will PM him some lanes. Shame spiritmr isn't on here any longer Ade you could have met up with him as he lives that way on[emoji3] I'm sure you'd get on well with him

Trailwise, OS, Council interactive map seems to be good enough for everyone else?

yup, have done most of that. got most of derbyshires lanes marked up on my memory maps, done most of em too.
i think most people are missing the point of my post really. it was about bringing people together from around the country to share information to help each other. but it seems most peeps are of the "ive done my research myself so iam not gonna help you"

I think you're propper missing the point, it was a friendly request from a senior member who was just asking for some pointers. It's a bit like if you posted a question in a normal defender forum and someones reply was 'buy a haynes manual cos that's seems to be good enough for everyone else' or take it to a garage'

IMO having a thread dedicated to sharing lane info will encourage people to post locations in what is a public part of the forum and we have many more visitors than members viewing at all times.

My advise would be to contact laners through an area thread and ask if anyone would like to show you round. If there isn't an active thread then put a thread up and ask.

I've joined groups out and about in other areas and shown folk around mine and have not just driven some lovely lanes but met some good people into the bargain

....and sometimes 'buy a manual' or 'take it to a garage' is good advise

I'm also happy to show other LZer's around - met some cracking guys on here that lane local, and when I've got a working vehicle, happy to show people around from further afield.....

But I'm also interested as to why people are reluctant to join GLASS....

Because their either too cheap or don't really care.

like I said earlier running Land Rovers (fuel or otherwise) ain't usually cheap so I guess it's more of the latter......

I don't think I am missing the point, to me the point is that if you give a location to someone you don't know, and they cause a problem at that location, tearing up the place, off pisteing, whatever, then you are to blame for the problem.

What would I know about posting questions on a normal forum? Never been on any forums cept LZ!

Yes, me too, if people locally pm me to discuss, I am always happy to take them round some local spots, and the others locally do too, as can be seen in Devon and Cornwall fred.

And I agree about Glass, compared to the other costs of running a 4wd it is trivial, and there are lots of benefits to joining, as well as their being the only serious campaigners to keep the lanes open to 4wd.

The cost may be trivial but Mr £1000 disco 1 I wanna get covered in mud run on a shoe string nobber won't shell out £30.

Obviously my £1300 disco is far superior.

My Disco was only £1200 with a years ticket, and it drives lovely, though a bit tatty Lot of other cost too, though, tax, insurance. MOT, fuel, tyres.

The mag and website are quite good, and you get a better search radius on trailwise for yer 30 quid.

I agree Glass membership has helped massively with planning trips. Far less of the "oh it's all Tarmac" when exploring.
