My 1982 Landrover Series III failed its MOT because the emissions were slightly high. The garage said that this was probably due to the fuel injectors needing replacing. When I called at the garage to collect the vehicle after this work was carried out, they had great difficulty in starting it. They suggested it needed a new battery. After a few yards of driving it, it started to labour and was difficult to get home. It was impossible to restart so I fitted a new battery.
However, again, great trouble in starting it, but also thick black smoke coming from the exhaust and very bad misfiring when running. The garage then said that a cylinder gasket had blown and would replace this (they thought that the 3rd cylinder may be misfiring).
After some weeks, they phoned me to say that it was ready but then called again very shortly afterwards to stop me from coming to collect it, as exactly the same thing had suddenly happened again, with black smoke and erratic running engine.
Before the fuel injectors were done, it started easily and ran well and there was only a little obvious exhaust emissions on start up, which cleared very soon when driving.
The garage have had the vehicle for 8 weeks now and it still isn’t repaired. They seem at a loss what to do. However, the only work that was done on it was the fuel injectors, so to me, this seems the obvious cause of all of its problems. Do you have any suggestions?

When I called at the garage to collect the vehicle after this work was carried out, they had great difficulty in starting it.

So they ****ed it. Let either them sort it out, or take it to someone who does know something about proper cars (read: Land Rover).
The latter will be WAY faster (8 weeks? you're kidding?)

(
Injectors? Are we talking doozel ere?
Didn't know 2.25s have injectors... Never worked on a diesel though.
)

Thanks for that - I agree 8 weeks is a crazy amount of time. Yes it is a 2.25 diesel. I am completely at a loss technically-wise on how to deal with it.

I looked at a Haynes but it is all a bit complex and I don't want to confuse what the garage has or hasn't done. I really want them to sort it out but they imply it might not be down to what they did-although, as I say, it was fine before they touched it.

I'm UK

Mate, UK is no more helpful than "this planet". Be more specific. People round here might know someone near you who can sort it out!

And with 8 weeks for them to make it worse, though different, I wouldn't let them touch it again. Possibly post who they are for other people...

And about complex: You have a Series 3. It's got four wheels and sucks, squeezes, bangs and puffs. No magic dragon inside or polish you have to feed every 50 miles...

Sorry Philvy-I saw that you were based in Frankfurt so felt UK was adequate. I am in London. You are probably right about not letting the garage carry on with it. However, I wanted some ideas as to what might have gone wrong with the fitting of the fuel injectors to have caused all of the problems it has, so that I can go back to the garage armed with this technical information. This would then be my bargaining tool to contra charge them and get the work done properly elsewhere. As it is, they say it is not their work that has caused the problems and I have no technical expertise to dispute this, even though it was fine when it went in.

Many thanks for replying, though.

Well, at least London is a bit more specific. I know there is a garage near Guildford, which I used once, and one I've heard about near Sheerness. The one in Sheerness is called Island 4x4 if I remember correctly, might be a parts dealer only.
I can't remember the name of the one near Woking/Guildford...
If you post it in the Series section you will get a good garage I suppose. Ask there about your problem with the description (misfire, new head gasket etc).
Cheers
Phil

You could try my Mechanic? Dunstable, £25/hour labour?

Tried Diesel Detox? That tends to clear out ****e, also clean the engine breather by undoing the grub screw, removing the hose and soaking it in fuel, replace the fuel filter if needs be.

Sorry to hear about your difficulties. Not quite sure what they mean by "replace",injectors are usually reconditioned by replacing the pintle valves, nozzles and washers. They are then tested for break pressure and spray form on a test machine, which is why the work is usually entrusted to adiesel injection workshop.Normally costs £40 per injector and takes24-48 hrs.Remove and replace from2268cc diesel takes 1-2hrs.Ithink the garage are taking the pee and woul find another!

black smokes too much diesel. incorrect injector spring pressure likely, especially if they messed with it.
best bet to get a set of known injectors (either borrowed from someone elses motor or set up from a diesel specialist) and swap them for yours and see if the problem persists.

nb early 90 110 na & td engines (the 12j & 19j) had the same injectors

ask the garage what they've done to your injectors. if they messed, find out what injecting pressure the set them to.

diesel emissions are visual only prior to 1978. (1974 petrol)
apologies if yours is after, just eaten a kebab between starting and finishing post and cant remember what you said......

Thanks to everyone and sorry for doing something I shouldn't have-didn't realise as I have never joined a forum before. I will let you know what happens as I will phone the garage tomorrow, armed with your suggestions, and will let you know what happens. Any more ideas between now and then will be gratefully received

Sorry, twas me who told him to open a new one in the series section as the other thread received no relevant replies...

Dont lynch the newbie, it wasnt his fault.
