Hello all,

I have scoured both the series 2A and series 3 part catalogues trying to find out what vehicle the hubs on my landy originally belonged to (so that I order the correct bearings, hub flanges and hub flange bolts for their rebuild) but so far I have drawn a blank.

Visually looking at them they don't look like early hubs and I think they are series 3 but I just want to double check because I seem to remember reading somewhere that there was a change from imperial to metric at some point and I don't want to drop the ball.

I have attached a couple of pictures to this post but the serial number cast into the hubs is 217292.

Any help, as ever, very much appreciated.

Cheers.

Olly.

Hi. Have you got any numbers on the bearings? These will be on the face.
If you can find them I will pop acccros to the bearing shop & ask them.
Hi Phill, thank you so much for your reply. I will check the bearings tonight (they are at home). Olly

They aren't series three hubs, they have screw in wheel studs which are peened over at the back to stop them winding out. As far as I'm aware, series threes all had press-in studs, splined with a head at the back. Not certain when the change-over took place but fairly confident... anybody know different?

Agree, they look like S2 hubs with the screw in studs. S3 have heads on and no circumferencial ridge in back face of the flange. They should be BSF wheel nuts. You can fit later metric studs in these by drilling them out and pressing the studs in, its a usefull repair if one of the studs pulls out. The studs are 9/16 BSF but all the replacement drums now seem to come drilled for the later S3 M16 studs but they fit OK as the drum is centred on the flange and held by the clamping force of the wheel nuts

Hi guys, I had a look at the outboard hub bearing inner race last night - the following was written on it:

Timken 11162.

I believe this is an imperial bearing, so its looking likely that I have series 2A hubs. I'm still a bit confused as to why I can't find that hub part number in any of the parts catalogues...

That isn't a part number (217292), it's more likely a casting number or has some other significance of no interest to us. Those hubs of yours will be imperial and the drive flange bolts will be BS, not UN or metric. I have one out in my workshop and I will check the size and thread gauge and let you know later.
Later: Just checked, the bolts are 3/8" BSF x 1 9/32" long. It is a shouldered bolt and fits all series Land Rovers up to 1984.
I use LR Direct for many parts like this but I usually buy my bearings and seals from a bearing stockist which you will find locally in Yellow Pages.

Ahhh hah! That's very interesting. I was potentially mislead by this because there are other components in the assembly drawings for the rear hubs (from the series 2A parts catalogue) that are 6 figure numbers all starting with '217' (please see below) so I just put two and two together and figured it must be a part number.

Still seems rather coincidental.......

Yes, that is odd or coincidental, go to lrdirect.com and input some of those 217 numbers; some come up with parts and some don't. I wonder if they are part numbers that have been superceded? The thing is that large castings often have numbers cast in, the purposes of which are often a mystery but they aren't necessarily part numbers.

Metric to imperial from 1980

Your bearing s2 rear
Rtc 3146 inner
Rtc3426 outer
Check yours as they state 2 different part numbers in the Landrover part manual

Oem kit rtc 3543g ( from britpart catalogue but not there bearing)
Did not get prices. But I have contact numbers if needed who supply next day.
Hope this helps
