Hi ,would like to know if anyone as an idea what is wrong with my defender 200tdi 1993 a could of weeks ago i went out stopped and it wouldn't restart? I had to jump it off ,it did this a couple of times more so i put a new battery on it and it was fine for a couple of weeks then did it again , so I've put a new alternator belt on checked and cleaned everything and its been ok for a week and its just done it again? Lights come on and when I turn key its just tik tik tik? Nothing? Wont turn over any ideas

If the lights don't dim when you try to start it check your cable from the battery to the starter motor and the engine/gearbox to chassis earth strap. Might be an intermittent contact. Or the solenoid and/or starter is knacked.
If the headlights are dim and almost go out when trying to start your alternator is probably buggered.

Are you sure that it's charging at the right voltage (13.something Volts)? Also I've had one with a high resistance in the battery positive to starter motor cable that would let the Lannie start on the first turn of the key then not for the rest of the day, diagnosed it by using a set of jump leads from the battery to the starter motor (+) and the chassis (-).
