Hello to all....Here goes...Landy Defender TD5 90 1999MY
Drove to work the other night (i do nightshift at the docks), parked up and no probs....came out of work at 06:00
(was light rain all night) key to position 2 and....no fuel pump noise...i thought er...that aint normal !! Cranked the engine....she wouldn't fire. Left her there and went back later in the afternoon. Tried the safety cut out (OK), 3/4 tank of Diesel (OK), Battery 12.4V (OK), gave the tank a bash....no differant so gave up and asked my mate to tow me home (that was fun!!). Today ive checked the main relay under the seat (OK), Pulled the plug off the Fuel pump and checked 0v (Dead), checked the fuse under the seat for fuel pump (OK), pulled the green relay out from the Gearshifter fuse box and shorted the contacts...the fuel pump starts up and starts to pressurize the system (tried starting the engine, turns over but will not fire), Checked with a volt meter behind the green realy and i get 12v across the coil to earth (coil is not getting an earth from the ECU to close). Pulled off the red & black plug from the ECU and the RED plug was oily....thought YES this is the issue.......Cleaned both plugs with Elec Cleaner and blew them out with an air line (and the ECU sockets), also took the lid off the ECU and its all clean in there. Put it all back...tried the engine...cranks but will not fire!!! Still no earth for the fuel pump relay to close. Tried a spare key & fob....no differant. I also notice that normally on key position 2 from cold...the ful pump starts (prime the pressure) & the glow plug lampo illuminates till ready and then goes out but......I'm not getting the fuel pump starting OR the glow plug lamp displaying??????? I'm convinced something that effects all the start up procedure is missing, no doubt just 1 thing that provides the ECU with the "OK to start" and gives the earth for the relays to close!!!! I'm out there again tomorrow as i need the Landy for work...as you can guess i'm running out of ideas !!!
Anyone had similar or can give me a few pointers? Thanks TS

No...i dont have this..tried downloading it but i get an "Error cant load database" replay? Ive been using a Haynes manual but the drawings are pretty much useless!!
i also have a TD5 work shop manual on the IPAD but makes ref to 2002MY (not my year).

OK...i found a good link and down loaded 4 files that i didn't have for my 1999MY so....ill have a read and see if there is anything i haven't allready tried....
one thing i did forget to mention was i cannot access the ECU with my code reader all i get is "unable to communicate" but saying that ive never been able to do this since ive owned the Landy (4yrs) !!

OK i have the RAVE files and looks that i have a few more leads to follow.....No there is no covert switch and its a factory fit immob but i do have a GPS tracker installed and i have this with the option to remove the supply from the master relay by remote (i installed this and ive shorted it out as part of my checks, but i know the master relay is closing because i've had a volt meter on the N/O contacts and 12v passes across OK. My code reader is a "I Car Soft for JLR" it has the 2 options for both Jaguar & Land Rover in the menu (works fine on my XKR) so i know this is OK.....What is strange it will read the ABS computer and gave me a "Fuel relay open circuit" message as a DTC....but i already know this !!!!!

Hi,

Not sure about the icar soft, but the TD5 was not fully OBDII comliant until 2004. So you may find it is not fully valid for your car.

If you look in the descriptions and operations section it gives a rundown of how the starting should work.

Cheers

Yes...ive read the Starting - Operation and it details how the fuel pump gets grounded by the ECU....ive printed out a few sections from this and the Circuit diagrames so as i can follow with a DVM....I will be on it again tomorrow so i will feedback on the progress !!!!!

Well....been out there again this morning...the battery has been on charge all last night and showing full at 12.4V..I removed the crank pos sensor plug as it was a bit oily and cleaned it with elec cleaner...made no difference!! Checked all the fuses regardless just in case...they are all ok. Disconnected the battery and left it for 10mins...made no difference. Tried my code reader again but it will not communicate with the BCM but does communicate with the ABS unit that again tells me the fuel pump is open circuit. Fuel pump relay has 12v on one side of the coil but the ground is not being switched by the ECU (as is the same for the glow plug start seq). I'm beginning to think the ECU is the fault as too many bits not working are relying on "it" to switch the "ground" on...TS
