Hi - I have a 98' 90 defender van and would like to install rear bench seating!
What is the legality of putting seats in the back? Do I need seat belts and how many people can I legally carry once installed? Do I need windows etc......
Cheers

As many people as you can fit so if you've got two man benches then you could have two people on each bench, then another two sitting on each of their knees on either side. You could maybe even squeeze another two down the middle. That's 10 so far. You only need to install windows if you plan on turning it into a chewing gum bus and need something for the passengers to lick.

windows arent a problem at all, you dont need those. You will need seatbelts though.

They are really simple to fit. they have 2 bolts holding the seat to the wheel arch (with a spreader plate on the underside) and clips on the back of the backrest that hold it tight against the side of the tub.

The seat belts (lap belts) again just bolt through the wheel arch with plates underneath to spread the load out more.

The kits can be fitted in no time

You know fookall as well. then?????

sorry? Thats now it was instructed when we fitted them to the series 3, and how i've removed them from defenders? just going from experience that's all.

You've been lied to. There is no legal requirement for Lapbelts on side facing bench seating or any other sidefacing seating. In fact it's illegal to restrain a child in a lapbelt on a side facing seat.

ahh I didnt know that! We were unsure in the series due to its age, and haven't fitted any yet as no one ever travels in the back. However on the defenders I have worked on they did have retractable lap belts, which to be honest Id rather have fitted just to be on the safe side of things anyway.

Looks like I need to do some more research and learning there then.

No legal requirement. Fitted 3 point harnesseses.....es in the back of mine cause it seems the safest option fer a side facing
