Hi

We have a landrover Disco TD5, 53 Plate, I was driving it at about 50 mph when it started making a strange noise and then the Black smoke started, I pulled it off the road and switched it off, but the engine continued to rev for a while and then it stopped.

We got it to a garage and he says there is no compression, but he hasn't had a chance to have proper look at it now, but it looks like it is going to need a new engine, it had only done 68k at the time, which is not much for a diesel engine.

Any ideas on what has happened, also if anyone know how much and where to purchase a replacement engine.

Are you sure it was black smoke and not huge plumes of grey?

It sounds like your turbo seals have gone causing your engine to run on on its own oil

Thanks for responding, I suppose the smoke probably was grey, looked dark though.

Is it an expensive problem?

Lack of compression might have been the headgasket failing as well, if it's failed between an oil gallery and the cylinder it may have been burning oil and would explain the running on after you turned the key.

What makes you say it 'looks like' you will need a new engine? It may be something completely different, wait for the garage's diagnosis before you start planning for the worst and pricing up new motors.
