hi. i been putting new glow plugs in my discovery
the last one fell apart and as left the little bit that glows inside the block
is there a way to remove it
Thanks:(

you could try a tiny magnet on the end of a piece of string, through the glow plug hole.
or gaffer tape a bit of plastic tubing onto the end of a vacuum cleaner.

Try starting the engine, you could just strike lucky and the bit will pop out, failing that I recon it's head off time.
Good luck.
Rob

PS: place a heavy but of cloth over the offending glow plug hole before you start the engine.

DO NOT START THE ENGINE.................

You will run the risk of the broken off bit getting trapped either under a valve or down the side of the piston. Try all the other stuff if you like but I would personally take the head off and do it right from the off.

Thank fook you said that, had a few like that where it stuck in the valve and it snapped the head off the valve then the head of the valve went right into the head, damaging the valve insert and even if it didnt it will damage the piston like firing bullets at it, a bit. Even had one that knocked the valve insert right out and through the piston.

In actual fact I dropped a screw as an apprentice from a rocker cover, and it went down the carb, not being able to find it I got another from the stores, not knowing it went down the carb off course, and when I fired it up it jammed a valve the bastid and bent it. A fokin v6 as well.

Just thought, might be able to get it out if you pull the injector.

The reason the tip of the glow plug broke off is due to the fact that it is gummed up in the head with carbon, so very little chance it will drop into the combustion chamber.
But I do aggree, taking the head off is the best bet.
Rob

PS: No need for the big red letters. :D :D

That's what I'd do .. pull the injector and use a magnet on a stick.

IMHO I wouldn't use blu-tac or anything like it ... I know of someone who did, but the stuff stuck inside!!! Head off then ...

I'm NOT SURE BUT I THINK THE TIPS ARE MADE OF COPPER AND IF THEY ARE THEY ARE NOT MAGNETIC TEST THE ONES YOU HAVE REMOVED FIRST.
BUT PERSONALLY I KNOW ITS A LOT OF WORK BUT I'D REMOVE THE HEAD AND DO NOT EVEN TRY TURNING TH ENGINE OVER AS IT WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY CAUSE SERIOUS DAMAGE.

Take the injector out, make sure both valves are closed. Put a compressed air line into the injector hole and see if you can blow it out. Can't do any harm and it might work. If you try a magnet at the same time the magnet and compressed air together could do the trick!

Are you for real

If the broken part is magnetic get a some magnetic wire let it stick to a strong magnet (speaker should do it) then feed the wire in that way you won't risk dropping anything else in.

Are you serious??????

How the fook do you think you could get all the remains of the glow plug out with anything other than taking the head off ???

I have taken heads off all sorts of engines and its by far easier and cheaper than just taking a chance.

I suppose you sceptics would take a chance with leaking brakes aswell would ya?

As far as the red letters go I dont think they were big enough.

And its not as if the apperture for the glow plug would give you much of a chance of fishing the bits out is it?

I do worry about some of you..................................

If your cock ring slipped off inside the missus you would'nt **** about with crochet hooks to get it out.
