If it is a modern LR it won't be fitted with an RV8 o_O My previous 3.5efi had 160k on the clock when I sold it & still had close to factory spec. compressions & used minimal amounts of engine oil.
Understood, the last RV8 was produced in 2004 but LR know they had issues from 3.9 onwards but never did anything to rectify.

54k sounds like lifetime expectancy of modern cars as a whole. Not great but by that time the manufacturer will expect the vehicle to be at least second hand and there fore the customer is not "their" customer.

Do people still get company cars, or has it gone over to personal leases? I know mine was only due for replacement after 3 years or 100K which ever was first, Do RR sports get sold in the majority as private or business cars?.

Cheers

My company car got replaced at 70k that's now been bumped up to 80k

Company cars do seem to be in decline. SWMBO used to have one but the company (charity) she works for changed their policy. It was nice having a car that we weren't responsible for the maintenance of, but as the only choices were a black 1.6 focus or a red 1.6 focus, and as we wanted something estate shaped with a towbar.

(as she manages events, us buying an estate has actually saved them a fortune in van hire. There's also a couple of events where having access to a Discovery saves them a lot of faff getting around site to set up)

When I bought the Disco I did look at whether it would be more cost effective for the business to buy it and for me to have it as a company car, but tax-wise that way lay madness.

Her volvo is an ex-lease car. Would definitely go down that route again when buying - it came with a very comprehensive service history printout, and everything had been done with OEM parts, Premium brand replacement tyres, etc

54K and its knacker is going back to the sixty`s when you would re ring and new bearings, you would expect cars now to do twice that no worries if serviced properly, for a luxury manufacture this is appalling to say the least.

To be fair, they have offered him an 80% good will on the repair cost on an engine that's out of warranty. Now I know it shouldn't have failed and they perhaps could have handled it better but this attempt at publicly shaming LR into doing something more than offering an 80% repair is probably not going to work. If its out of warranty its out of warranty!

And who's to say its done 56k anyway? Unless hes the first owner he's got no idea. First three years are prime for clocking, I once knew of a chap who bought approved used, did 20k a year for a couple of years and had them clocked back so just 10k had been covered in the time and chopped them back in for another. Thing is as there is no MOT and no real record of anything in the first 3 years apart from a service book there is no electronic record etc. We had a couple of astravans, both mine, both bought new and both went through their first MOT at over 100k, I didn't but it wouldnt have been difficult to have them pegged back to 30k, and sold them as lightly used low mileage examples. Both looked like new after a valet, you would never have known by the way they drove. As it happens one is up to 221k, and the other at 120k or so and both going strong!

I was under the impression this guy had it from new and was a reliable friend of Doo's?

Ahh, I may have given that impression

Sorry, no offence meant :)

He's a bit of a friend of a friend. As far as I know, he bought it new and it was well enough cared for. I still think 54k is a ridiculous figure for an engine to expire.o_O

Due to this Im not happy to pay anything towards the repair as the fault is far from no fault of my own, and when spending £50,000 on purchasing the car 4 months prior to this I certainly didn't expect this to happen.

Surely looking at his statement in the first quote above he has only owned it 4 months, But @Doo , you are saying he has owned if from new..........What am I missing here??

Cheers

I don't know about brand new cars as I've never bought one (cannot justify the depreciation) but our 11 year old Ford auto has done a genuine 150k & still going strong - so much for the old adage 'Dagenham dustbin'
Perhaps an appropriately sounding phrase should be dreamed up for LR  I'm happy with my Classic but would never buy one of their new products even if depreciation wasn't an issue.

Agreed, even main stealers were originally treating slipped liner symptoms as head gasket failures before the real cause became known. In the case of early P38's this often occurred (fortunately for the owners) within the warranty period. I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall at LR's subsequent board meetings

Screams to me of one being chopped in to an LR dealer with a bit of a fault, its been resold and lasted 4 months and unlucky for the new owner its bitten them. Still, understand the frustration but asking LR for 100% is pushing it. Having said that it should have come with an LR approved used warranty which you'd think would cover major mechanical failure!
