Hi Guys

If you remember me then you will know I aquired a 89 19J a couple of months ago. Ive got a couple of problems which as a complete noob, with a willing to learn, have been researching. Pls, any reference to fit a 200 or 300 can be disregarded as i def do not have the funds.

Here we go, i dont drive the 90 very often and its usually only short trips, its a pure toy for playing and offroading. The exhaust smokes on start up but quickly clears after a min or too and then is fine. Mileage 138K. Has had service by LR for past ten years covering 15K.

I noticed today that the heater is only blowing cold air, Ive had a look and noticed that the oil cap hose to the air intake is very oily, also the turbo has started blowing a bit of smoke on start up. Am i right in thinking that if I flush the heater matrix and do a full flush of coolant, maybe replace oily hoses that this will probably solve the problem or am i being a bit niave? If I don't replace hoses then will the excess oil just burn off? To conclude, i think a blockage in the heater matrix is the problem, could this cause extra pressure in the oil bay causing oil to pass through the hose to the air filter/intake then to the turbo? Comments appreciated.

Also, i have seen several people have disconnected the hose from the oil cap to the air intake, is this a good idea or not and how should i go about it if it is better?

Many thanks

Sharpe

just run it through an oil catch can, and pour the contents back into the engine once a month - don't just disconnect it

The coolant / heater issue is unrelated to the oil in your air intake. There's hundreds of threads on here about improving the heater performance - on a 19J it should be fine. I had a 19J in my Ninety last winter and was always nice and toasty. Since fitting a 200tdi I can hardly get warm this winter!

19j @138000:eek:I would get that breather OUT of the air intake ASAP if I was you. Then check air filter is clean.Replace if not!Just put the hose in a can or putting oil and fumes in chassis why!
Heater matrix is likely a separate problem:)

My heater is good too!A new matrix is not that dear but fitting them is a bit fiddly.Like instantsquid says, search,it is mostly on here:)

Thanks for the replys, ive done a few searches but not found that much, is the search on here a bit to be desired? Key words other than 19j heater matrix pls.;-)

all i did on my 90 was push the clip what the cable goes to on heater martix box has far back has it goes no she blows toasty and warm , yeah my 200 only gets warm with a rad muff

Any suggestions on where to get a catch can from? ive flushed matrix and tried pushing clip all way across (which it already was) No joy. Now my battery light is constantly on with low voltage showing even though ive put a brand new battery on. im thinking new matrix and alternator now.......can i DIY making a catch can or does it need to be a proper one?

My 89 motor had a new genuine land rover replacement heater fitted and still ran cold.
Full flush and refill proved it was only an air lock.
Still got a bit of pressure in the rocker box cover.
