l322 trim levels query, are you familiar with marque?

hi i sold my old p38, got a disco2 (es7)-bloody thing weighs a ton, or rather two and a half. and its not quite what i wanted. I'm gonna rob a bank and buy myself 2002/2003 v8.
What i want to know is, if i went for a Vogue or an HSE what i would be missing/gaining. i want a java black model, with a sort of whitish seat trim. or maybe the lightstone. (yeah yeah, it looks drug-dealer/hairdresser, but its my money!)
From what i have looked at, the hse, doesnt have the (dated) satnav, it has a cd player in the dash. much better than a remote changer. (in my opinion) i think the nav flips down to reveal a cassette? (useless) so assuming there are three levels, 1.HSE 2. vogue 3. autobiography. what am i 'trading in' for the hse?
i have seen some models with light wood dash sides, some with I think burl walnut, and i think some with ebony black 'wood' this sounds a silly question regarding the rest of the car i realise, but i dont want to find out after i bought one, that i 'could have had something much better' previous p38 was an autobiography, and was such a nice car to look at, but it was a pile of cack!
please no silly diesel diehards tell me to keep the disco2 -it's a polished turd!

With the vogue spec you get the rear heated seat, the built in sat nav (which you can upgrade to the later MK4 nav unit which allows you to use the new 2010 map discs) TV module, heated wheel and more electric toys. I have a 03 4.4 V8 vogue with all the extras and rear PS2/DVD entertainment and it's an amazing car but they do have there problems just like the p38 (granted it dosent have as many, yet?)

no not yet,
when you have driven for a few weeks in a range rover. you get used to it. when you climb in a disco, even with the leather and active ride, there's no room to swing a cat. the td5 sounds like a toolbox being kicked down the stairs. and it just so heavy. the newer rangie (l322) is a luxury car. thats what I want. i pull a caravan, i buy lots of big stuff, and fill the thing up. i dont need to drive through rivers, or pull other landrovers out of rivers. the p38 i had weighed 2.4tonnes the disco2 weighs 2.5 tonnes, its smaller slower, and doesnt go in the car parks! i could pull you out of a river, with kids in the boot and a boat on the roof. but i tell you what i would rather be driving.
if the two cars l322 and same year disco2 es7 were the same money, would you consider a rangie? coz you can buy them FOR THE SAME MONEY!
(i'm talking hammer price, not forcourt prices)

yeah yeah, i'm not gonna drive it on mud. i had a rangie, ive had a couple, in my time, i've got a disco now, -but i dont grow a beard, or wear camourflage caps, or boast about my 90 inch chassis, airlock diffs, or descent angles. this thread is about which trim level to choose, not disco/defender versus rangies. guys, gals, whats your trim level, and what do you like about that model, or what is 'missing'?
 
Vogue has totally different front seats to HSE - if you look at adverts you can tell by the headrests in a Vogue, which look quite unique - this is also a good way of telling a HSE that has had its rear badge changed to look like a vogue too ;). I haven't actually sat in a HSE, but I'm told the Vogue seats are more comfortable, and they have more angles etc which are adjustable (same seats as in a BMW 7 series for the spotters out there).

My vogue has a sun roof, which if I'm not mistaken is a vogue only feature, may want to check on this though.

Otherwise as you have pointed out its mostly the satnav/tv/info screen.

One thing to take into account is badge snobbery - Vogues will hold their value and sell better than HSEs because of their badge - don't underestimate this! (and you won't have to go around explaining forever why you got a HSE instead of a Vogue).

Autobiography is a rare beast, seem to hold their value better and I'm not sure which year they appeared, but I have a feeling it was after 2003. They get some different trims inside, but I'm not certain what.

In terms of wood etc, I think you can get any finish on any model, its just what the original customer spec'd. Personally I think the wood looks dated now and so I would stick to a non-wood trim, but each to their own. If you are lucky you will find one that someone has upgraded to 'piano black' finish, but these are rare.

I have just bought a 2002 Vogue after looking at a few HSE's. The seats in a Vogue are a softer leather and I find them much more comfortable. The HSE seats seemed much harder and cheaper in comparison, more like the ones in my old X type. The whole Vogue interior felt nicer to me (IMHO).

Might be an idea to find a dealer who has one of each so you can compare back to back and decide what you want.
 
i drove a few HSE's before buying my Vogue, and in addtion to the extra toys already listed, I felt the whole interior of the HSE felt a bit 'cheap', I know it's only different chunks of plastic here and there, but IMHO, the Vogue just feels that bit more special
 
I've had both

Firstly a Vogue which is admittedly nicer inside due to the wood trim. The Sat Nav is a load of ****e, the TV tuner won't work in some regions now because of Digital switch over.

The seats are the same leather apart from electric headrests and lumbar support. Rear heated seats and wheel, never used em. The HSE does look a bit more low rent with grey/silver cappings but these can be changed if needed. The HSe also has a 6 disc in the glove box but the stereo doesnt have the DSP/amps but still sounds okay to me.

Other than that theres not much difference. I dont miss the other toys from the Vogue tbh which was also plagued with electrical issues that this HSE doesnt have.

This is not quite right, if you do the MK4 sat nav upgrade, you can use the latest 2010 maps and the sat nav is great, with regards to the TV module not working if you have the TV module you can use the AV channel to connect a free view box so you can still watch TV.

MattStevenson - I read earlier that you had the DVD installed. I have an 04 Vogue with this factory fitted. It has a remote control that only seems to control the screens mounted in the back of the front headrests. Does your remote actually control the DVD too? I haven't managed to get an answer from LR dealership. Thanks.

Hi mate, sorry but don't think I can help as my DVD setup is part of a playstation 2 setup that the previous owner had installed with after market screens fitted to the front headrests. In answer to your question I would had thought that the remote would control everything, does it have the play, pause, stop buttons etc.. Which would control the DVD playback?

Well, my thread has received a good few readings, and i thank those that have replied. To me it would seem the HSE is probably what i need, although if the vogue was at a similar price, if not too high(er), i would go for the vogue. To me the basic car itself is the main reason to buy one. and with standard aircon, and all leather interior, its just right. The range rover so usefull to me. The standard equipment on the HSE suits me, i dont really need to cook the kids in the rear seats, or watch telly in the car park, and i can put up with a slightly less spec'd audio system, If i need to I use a portable satnav. I could add some secondhand wood cappings one day should i want to snob it up a little, they look nice, without going down the bling road with those chrome bits on the outside. they look awful. I will try and get a few free test drives at some dealers, just to make sure, before getting my wallet out. but as i'm pretty handy with a spanner, and faultfinding is my job, i hope to get something i can tidy up/resolve. these cars are a labour of love, as i found out from owning a p38 and a classic. thanks guys.

Did all the Vogues come with satnav/tv module, heated steering wheel etc? or were they extras that had to be asked for?
